Sister on the Edge of Autism

A sibling's-eye view of autism in life, family, and culture.

Shows worth watching in April

PBS shows to spotlight adults with autism.

As the sister of a woman with autism I can't help but notice that the mainstream tends to focus on children with this disorder: their diagnoses, schooling and therapy.

But we who've watched these kids become adults know that therein lies the next challenge: supporting adults with autism.

For that reason, its great to read about a new film called "Autism: Coming of Age," which will be aired in April on PBS.

The hour-long documentary, produced by Catherine Sager, looks into the lives of three men with autism and with varying capabilities.

The film notes that about 800,000 children with autism will "age out" of the public school system over the next 15 years.

In April PBS will also air a six-part series on "PBS Newshour" hosted by veteran journalist Robert MacNeil. A New York Times blog reported that MacNeil was inspired to take part in the series because his grandson has autism.

The series, scheduled to broadcast from April 18-26, includes an episode about adults with autism. For a complete rundown of the schedule, visit the PBS website.
