Without recognizing it as such, we are engulfed in a cult of personality, identity and selfhood that preaches the mostly fictional idea that each one of us is a certain type or character -- as in a story or movie -- and that we are essentially stuck in this type or character by reason of genetics and upbringing and country of origin. In this cult, people are essentially certain things, tools fulfilling a role, and then we are told to "find ourselves", as if each of us is some thing that can be found, and to accept and "celebrate" who "are". The notion that we are constantly changing, constantly becoming, part of a spiritual happening, is lost, if not derided and dismissed as pure, simpleton nonsense. A more ancient religion recognized that there was really one one being. The "I am who am". The rest of us, the rest of the universe is becoming within the context of that being. And, to the extent this cult of selfhood denies our becoming and our constant changing, it robs us of
