A Shift of Mind

Opening to a shift of mind

As an introduction to my blog, I’d like to explain why I chose the title, A Shift of Mind. I find nothing so acutely pivotal, so illuminating as a virtual shift of mind. It can occur in a nanosecond and change our lives and our very world. What can be more powerful than shifting how we see? An insight is a momentary opening, but deeper still is the commitment to it. The insight becomes a defining moment in which the mindscape of our reality opens to a deeper and more meaningful existence, with a spiraling up in our personal evolution.

I’ve been very fortunate to experience such shifts and have devoted my work as a psychotherapist to facilitating not only change, but more literally, transformation. I’ve come to see that we struggle with change because of how we picture reality. This picture remains stuck in a worldview that still clings to outmoded 17th century science. This operating belief system binds us in a straitjacket that limits our potential and encumbers our lives with fear, anxiety, meaninglessness and an array of other maladies. The common believe that it’s hard to change is the natural outcome of such a worldview that is mechanistic, in which change is an exception.

Moreover, I believe that the epidemics of emotional and psychological malaise that we battle are fundamentally due to this paradigm which sees the universe as a lifeless machine and us as mere cogs in that machine, bereft of meaning or purpose. However, when our beliefs adapt to the remarkable discoveries of the emerging sciences, transformative change becomes normative.

My opening to the powerful participatory model of the emerging sciences—quantum physics, complexity theory, chaos theory-- not only quieted many of my life challenges, but immersed me in a creative unfolding in which I began to experience a sense of life mastery, of potentiality perched on the cusp of each new shift of mind. I founded a process of thinking rooted in this new paradigm, which I call Emergent Thinking®. Many of my future posts will illustrate the benefits of such a perspective.

This blog will be devoted to bringing such shifts into our lives; reframing how we think, how we live and how we relate. I'll be taking the science and integrating it into a pragmatic approach for living, breaking free of archaic and nonsensical beliefs that constrain us. I look forward to sharing this with you.
