You make the bet every day. So do I. The stakes are mounting in a lottery run by pure evil. I believe in evil. It's not a metaphor. If you doubt my intensity, ask the brown pelicans. Ask the Kemp's ridley turtle. Ask the Vietnamese fishermen hanging on by the tips of their worn-to-the-bone fingers.

Oil Spill Stopped, Gamblers May Lose All Animal Extinction BetsOn Thursday there were two major developments that may allow US President Barack Obama to sleep easier in the coming weeks. The Senate passed long-anticipated financial reform, and BP finally has had the oil leak stop flowing.
The only bad news coming from the stoppage of the oils spill may be for gamblers who placed wagers at online sports books involving the oil spill. Months ago, several online gambling sites posted odds on which animals would become extinct because of the spill.
The odds on the Kemp's ridley turtle were the strongest because the turtles are known to migrate to the gulf in the spring. The Kemp's ridley turtle had 9/5 odds. The Bluefin Tuna is second on the list with 6/4 odds.
"It is very fortunate that BP was finally able to find a way to stop the oil from flowing," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. "On the other hand, it looks as though the sports books will again beat the public. Even with something completely out of the realm of sports, such as the oil spill, the sports books find a way to win."
"The sports books will again beat the public." So will the major oil companies. You can bet on it. We'll be the losers. But nothing we'll lose will equal the baffled fear we saw in the eyes of the oil-drenched pelicans and birds. A recent NY Times article spoke of "Gulf oil spill fatigue." How have we become so privileged, disconnected and faux-weary? How have we so thoroughly forgotten our place on this earth and our interdependence with all life? How have we forgotten that "We are all one." is not a metaphor? It is scientific fact. How will you, how will I get clean from our common addiction to fossil fuels?
