I worked in the mental health field for years. Years ago there were institutions that would take you if you we said you were a danger to yourself and others. Those places have closed. It isn't even easy to find a psychiatrist who is willing to force a patient into a hospital for his own good. Now hospitals and clinics want insurance first and they have limited beds space for the mentally ill.There needs to be a national discussion on this issue.
But where there's expenditure of money, it's hard to get policy-makers to budge.
1.8 billion has been cut from mental health budgets from 2009 -2011. After Sandy Hook, some of those cuts are being reconsidered.
