Should Prison Inmates Have the Right to Masturbate?

Should prison inmates have the right to masturbate? I was interviewed about this on Public Radio last week. To prepare, I read up on the subject just a bit. And I was shocked. Read More

I first had to check that

I first had to check that this is not April the first. Is this for real. I have never heard of this before. Can you tell me which states of America this applies to? I live in Australia.

unbelievable

Prisons turn a blind eye to actual rape, but punish masturbation? Insanity!!

But did Klein interview

But did Klein interview corrections officers and wardens in his research? Did he interview anyone?

It is possible that the purpose of the regulation (and I'd agree that this purpose could be acheived with a more precise rule than 'no masturbation') was both to forbid inmates from very indiscretely masturbating as a form of agressive display toward guards and as a way of intimidating and harassing cellmates. Maybe the intent wasn't to encourage guards to penalize inmates for all masturbation but to allow them to selectively punish its use as harassment.

Stands to figure

Men have few if any sexual or reproductive rights outside of prison.

Wacko lesbo-feminism criminalized normal male behavior through expanded definitions of sexual harassment and rape.

Revolutions often result in tyrrany, and the sexual/feminist revolution was no exception. Using the French Revolution as a modern prototype as an analogy, the barbarians have taken charge and we're now in the Reign of Terror phase.

Since when?

Women masturbate nowadays? This is news to me

Masturbation rights

Do sex therapists have the right to masturbate after they interview patients? How about priests after they hear confession? What about doctors performing surgery.........can they masturbate during the operation? Can you masturbate while being interviewed on radio? Is it legal for pilots to masturbate in flight? Can a police offer masturbate after catching a criminal? Is it appropriate for mourners to masturbate on a grave?

Michael Michalko, Of course

Michael Michalko, Of course not. No-one has the right to masturbate in private, but prisoners do have the right to masturbate in the privacy of their own cell without getting prosecuted.

I'm not really sure how, but

I'm not really sure how, but exploration of a human right's question became an attack on feminism in this article. Interesting question, but blaming feminism is a stretch.

Freedom

Hi I'm from Europe, and I must say that the US is seemingly on a path to becoming an oppressive police state the like of Iran, Belarus or China. In order to adapt to religious people's disdain of nudity and sexuality even when it is not explicit or harassing is making the US loose one of its fundamental cornerstone of its culture and society, which is freedom of speech and religion.
Forbidding any person from sexual relief of any kind, while serving a life sentence is so cruel that in my mind it borders on downright torture.

You americans seriously have to stop the religious tyranny, and allow for arts, criminals and everyone else express their sexuality as long as it doesn't harm anyone.

Disagree

I'm a shrink in prison, and this article does not reflect what actually happens. The officers understand masturbation and for the most part don't care. It becomes a problem when inmates masturbate AT you, but otherwise... Of course there are some people on their own trips, but most people just want to come in and get their jobs done with as little drama and paperwork as possible. Believe me. On another note, inmates are not placed in prison and "robbed of their dignity." Inmates place themselves in prison. Yes, there are the disenfranchised, the mentally ill, the ill equipped... but there are also rapists, molesters, murderers, con-men, shot-callers. The state has no money, and folks were given plenty of turns to walk before they were locked up. No doubt it sucks here, but then again it's supposed to suck.

You are obviously one of the

You are obviously one of the "people" who see their own power as more important than humanity. Have you ever looked into the number of convicts who have had the maximum penaly assigned at their first offence? I thought not. Have you ever considered that your "programs" are designed to encourage recitivism? Because they are. Denying these people the opprotunity to relieve stress in such a positive way is definitely cruel and unusual punishment.

perhaps

I think you misunderstood me. When I said that officers don't care -- I meant they don't mind. Officers really don't interrupt imates private stress relief activities unless they are doing so in appropriately (as in AT you when you walk by.) Many officers offer a courtesy stroll down the units before medical or nursing approaches a door so neither the inmate or the staff is surprised by anything. The inmates don't particularly want to be interrupted either, mind you. As for the rest of your comments, I have no problem with the expression of opinions.

Expression of opinions

Of course you have no problem with someone expressing a contradictory opinion. You are not going to let a human interfere with your power trip or your narcisism.

Prisoner masturbation

In nursing school we learned that sex drive is a natural force of biology, like hunger, and thirst. It seems very odd that our justice system does not recognize this and attempt to address a safe outlet for these needs. Given that prisons are dealing with people that tend to have problems adapting to societal
norms in the first place, it seems an uphill battle and waste of time and energy to try to fight masturbation and consensual sex. Work on keeping them safe and let them be.
