How Persecution of Gay People May Have Caused Wikileaks

As a nation, we refused to take Bradley Manning for what he was, a very smart, earnest young guy who loved his country and happened to be gay. When will American society finally graduate from high school? Read More

Choices

Despite Bradley Manning's experiences, there is no excuse for his reaction. He didn't just strike back at the military, or the government. The information he leaked put lives in danger. It doesn't matter if he was gay or straight- he was a soldier. Being a soldier means accepting the responsibilities that go along with the profession, and realizing that the choices you make may have life-or-death consequences for others.

I support the end of DADT, and I hope to see the military and government stop persecuting people for their sexual orientations, race, or gender. And I'm not saying he didn't have legitimate reasons for grievances, anger, feelings of betrayal, etc. But none of that took away his ability to choose his actions.

What I'm saying is that persecution of gay people may have caused feelings of anger/abandonment in Bradley Manning, but it did not cause him to choose that *particular* course of action to express his discontent. He did that all on his own, and he should suffer the consequences - because as a soldier, he knew better.

lives in danger

Hi Rachel,

I see your point, but it has to be weighed against the lives that were put in danger by the secrets that have now been exposed. Not just in danger, but the the lives that were lost. Would the U.S. have invaded Iraq if the public had been made aware of just how artificially created the justifications were? Doubtful. Over a hundred thousand people have probably died in this war, most of them civilians, and tens of thousands of American soldiers wounded severely. They need to be included in any calculations of lives put in danger.

Christopher, Did you actually

Christopher,
Did you actually see what was exposed in Wikileaks? It actually proves there were weapons of mass destruction hidden all over Iraq. For the soldier to claim that he did this because "he was picked on because he's gay" (so called "victim" excuse) is the kick in the teeth to anyone who is gay. Obviously, the ends do not justify the means in this case and this soldier should be put on trial, and if found guilty, executed for treason.

Agree with you Rachel. I am

Agree with you Rachel. I am straight, yet I was bullied repeatedly in grade school, beat up on a daily basis all through sixth grade. Nothing can justify this soldiers action, nothing.

Hard pressed to feel sorry for him...

I know people who have suffered worse by far and have not become traitors! Virginia Department of Social Services taking children out of the home, accusations of homosexuality, discriminated against by gays, minority religions, people who have not chosen who Social Services thought were "appropriate" mates, still did not become a traitor putting American lives at risk! I've never had anything about the very rich and very cocky Julian Assange on MY facebook page and Mr. Bradley Manning can follow suit!

Bradley Manning is a true

Bradley Manning is a true patriot and was upholding his oath to the Constitution of the USA. He exposed a domestic enemy, the US government.

The DoD has confirmed that no deaths occurred due to the result of the documents being given to Wikileaks. However, we have been continually lied to by our own government and thousands, if not tens of thousands of lives have been lost.

This man deserves our respect, not 9 months in solitary confinement and torture.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant of a corrupt government. Manning was just opening the shades.

"In times of universal

"In times of universal deceit, telling the truth will be a revolutionary act." -George Orwell

Manning is a hero and patriot of the real kind, not the blindly following neo-con, tea-bagging chickenhawks kind. The world needs MORE Bradley Mannings, all over the planet, in every corner, in every country.
