Are All Memoirs Fiction?

A few years ago Oprah Winfrey famously criticized James Frey for fabricating large parts of his memoir A Million Little Pieces, the story of his recovery from drug addiction. I find that it is our human

I find that it is our human nature that try to
spice things up while giving other parties a loadown, because they buy it.That is why we enjoy watching movies with actors playing rather than the documentary ones.We also have the nature of accepting stories out of ordinary, sales meet the market.

Augusten Burroughs

Your comment about Augusten Burroughs having to change the designation of Running With Scissors from "memoir" to "book" is incorrect. RWS still states on the cover, as it always has, that the book is a memoir. Also, not one word of the manuscript as published was changed, even after the lawsuit was settled. A few additional words were added on the acknowledgements page stating that while everyone's memories can be somewhat different, the essential facts of the story are true. After three years of litigation, that was the plaintiffs "vindication." To connect Burroughs and Frey in the same vein of fraud and deception is unfair and simply wrong. Frey outright lied. Burroughs did not.
