What about savings and invstment?

I think this is a good guide, but you left out teaching children about savings and investments (e.g., stocks, bonds, real estate). Many young people make the mistake of not investing. (Also, your analogy between managing a national budget and a family account is invalid.)

I also fully agree that it is far too simplistic to compare a family to a government. My intention is to use this as a teachable moment. Thanks again for making this a better piece.
