Where does Evil Reside?

What is the evil we all see but won't notice; where does it dwell? In a faar-awaay savage land perhaps? Next door? Home? But isn't it reassuring to know, that as Dorothy Says in her pledge of allegiance-There Is No Place Like Home. Read More

clarification

Could you clarify exactly what you were trying to say in this article?

What Exactly do I mean?

The question is very good. Thank you.

I did not post an article but rather a blog entry. This is a form of communication akin to a diary--and dissimilar certainly from a journal article, or an essay, or even journalism. Thus, the entry does not have a thesis, nor, having as a title a question, attempt to answer a question in a definitive way.

It is further complicated by the fact that it closes with a veiled reference to a Parry, a "Chatterbot" that was created to emulate the thought process of a paranoid schizophrenic.

It is then a brief inquiry into structures that house evil--structures that evil inhabits--structures structured to invite habitation by evil, structures open to invasion by evil.

In its simplest form it accepts the thesis of Freud's "Beyond the Pleasure Principle" but states that Freud came closer to identifying the principle opposed to life (evil) in his essay on Dostoyevsky (Dostoyevsky and Parricide) than he did in the better known Beyond the Pleasure Principle. The heart of the matter is closer to father-son conflicts than to dissolution of energy.

I do hope this helps; if it does not, please ask on.

Where does evil reside?

On the flip-side of the coin with good. Where does "good" reside?

Good and evil reside in the same place and we are the keepers. We let it enter, or we can keep it out of anything - from personal realationships to global politics. From what our children watch on TV to what is preached on a pulpit.

Seeing or Choosing not to see - That is a good question. The ability not to see evil is easier when it is not happening to "us". The few who see that all of creation is the only group, the only "us", tend to see the evil.

The burthen of the decision to notice...

It took Freud a long time and a shock close to home.

To accept that there is Good--and even to notice it, is also difficult. Not as difficult as it is with evil though, as you say.

Ignorance may be bliss; but not in the long haul.

Yes, the Mystery of the Noster in the Paternoster.....

evil re sides.

I have an answer to your question. I believe my heart is on the left-hand side because I am right-handed. If my right controls my left, then I can live under the illusion that I have some reign over that lovely organ that keeps me breathing.

Parricide? I would venture further to say "Parricide's Doom". It may be that evil is but a catalyst for our decisions and then penetrates to re side within the aftermath; the consequences we face post-sin.

The necesary illusion.

The heart, as you say, is a sinister organ.

Is it the father then who leads us into temptation?

Parricide's Dome.

The Princess and the Goblin?

The Heyoka World

Among the Elders of the Lakotah People are some who say the virtual world-o'-hurt inhabited by the "civilized" peoples is in its entirety Heyoka.....upside-down, inside-out, and backwards. They take the 'image' from their own long-time reliance on Persons who receive the "Thunderbird Vision," the so-called 'Contraries' or Sacred Fools, the Heyokas, to have always before them examples of how NOT to live.

"Evil" is of course L-I-V-E backwards, as any fool (or at-least this one, anyhow) can plainly see. So in a Heyoka World the "problem" of "evil" is "solved" by being a Heyoka Heyoka, as old Fools Crow told us one Day....laughing uproariously. He declined to say what Vision Quest Medicine would help a Person onto that path, except to say, dead seriously, that anybody who got it would know it for sure....adding he was glad it wasn't going to be him.

It used to be the function of Heyokas, essentially, to do everything to excess, suffering the consequences for all to see. So in that Way of Being in The World, "evil" is not knowing when enough is enough, or knowing but being unable to stop at it. Nothing defines the "dominance" paradigm more concisely, nor better explains the terminal mess its gotten its adherents into here in its (and their?) latter Days.

So biologically speaking "evil" presents as a disease....evidently terminal if not treated. This raises again the matter of Medicine.
There is some, of course.

Living Backwards in a backwards world

Yes, and how many backwardses piled on how many?

I wonder how being a Heyoka, much less a Heyoka Heyoka attaches itself to dark sorcery? Or the dark dark sorcery of "the civilized"?

No amount of ghost dancing will bring back the buffalo--or send the white ghosts packing, I fear.

A GhostDancers' Chance in Hell

Actually, the Heyoka Heyoka vision confers considerable natural immunity to both the seduction and the effects of (others') sorcery. Anyhow, the "verdict" is not yet in on the efficacy of the GhostDance, which has never stopped despite the worst efforts of the seventh cavalry. The "white ghosts" do seem to be systematically losing their "grip" here....and the Buffalo are in fact returning.

It looks like "civilization" just isn't going to "take" here on Turtle Island after all. Maybe the 'biology' is just all wrong.

Does the evil always have a

Does the evil always have a fore-shadow? Is it the calm before the storm, The Heart of Darkness, or a white flash? If you watch closely you can always detect evil before it arrives. Maybe you just have to be a woman to see the foreshadow before The shadow.

Evil

IT is sad that we have spent so much time exploring this word, EVIL.

It is apparent that we are all evil in so far that the evil we are committing is viewed as good by another.

It is not an act of evil which leads an individual to darkness. It is the act which leads an entire society to darkness that we ought worry about.

Deception at its best, Machiavellian deception... lack of education,(?) manipulation, and deprivation of order, which leads us all to evil.

Perhaps it is too late for our society this time around. Evil is lurking and may be here to stay.

But in the meantime enjoy your latte' and anticipate tomorrow as being better than today, because I am sure it will be?

One time I was watching the movie version of The Tin Drum.
It was in a movie theater in Aspen.

There is the scene where there is a set of Russian boots going down into the cellar. The Russians have "come in". It's over. It's just beginning.

Evil Lives In-Between

Between Light and Darkness,
Heaven and Hell,
Woman and Man,
Beginning and End,
Cause and Effect.
Yin and Yang.
East and West.
Pleasure and Pain.

Evil lives in the interstitial space. It lives in the space of ambiguity that is not easily defined. It slips and slides between the cracks in the paved road of good intentions. It's chilling in the white noise of the tv set just waiting for you to notice it. It lives in the messages of a barking dog. It's under your bed. It's in the house made of candy. Perhaps it's the curiosity to enter the in-between space, and see what's on the other side. Or perhaps it's the wall-flower, waiting for someone to ask it to dance.

family business

I am nominally working at The Trident alongside my second youngest daughter Christina and I have just read your post with a great deal of relish and a little mustard. She is home for Thanksgiving. I am still of the opinion that the chink whereof you speak—that chink that is in the wall in the play within the play—the chink that may or may not keep the lion at bay--is mostly defined as or rather more likely by family business. This opinion might be biased by the postdecision rationalization attendant on just having spent nearly 17$US on “family business” selected letters between father and son allen and louis ginsberg. Obviously I am on some sort of postFreudian jag. I would have had you write into your antinomies Father and Son. Of course that evades as I have five daughters and no sons….

In this place whereof you speak… which way The Kingdom of Heaven? Up, down, sideways, NSEW, no way???
