Home Based Work, ADD & Hannah Montana

A person with ADD needs to work at home.

Millions of people around the world now are home based workers. We see it in small self employed set ups, mid sized and large multinational companies. The business model simply makes a lot of financial and operational sense for all types of businesses now. I've been home based for over 10 years now, and have also had the choice to stop in at an office location downtown too.

Kind of the best of both worlds for me. I mentioned having the best of both worlds to my little 9 year old daughter and she said "best of both worlds, just like the Hannah Montana song right Dad"! Being home based is not right for everyone, I love it. It allows me to make a very busy life work. However being home based can offer many challenges for people....and a person with ADD needs to work at focusing and concentration when at home.

The focus of working at home not only requires you to make sure you get done what needs to be done, but it also means learning to balance work when it's always accessible and can draw you in too much as well. I've found this little list of strategies to be very effective for my use:
a) Connecting with others outside the home based office is important. Meetings, an office plug in center or taking your laptop and doing some work from a coffee shop helps to connect and mix things up.
b) Staying organized and neat is important, if a mess from the home life spills into your office life, it can distract and create a hard work environment.
c) Take the time in the day for you. With no commute to the office, time in traffic or driving, people who work at home can tend to get up and fall right into their work. Taking some down time during the day is important to recharge, help with focus and gain better results.
d) Get cleaned and showered up in the morning as if you were going into an office. It helps create a good work environment.
e) Create schedules for specific tasks. Many people think they don't need to be as organized. I find the opposite.....it requires more effort to plan and be organized.
f) Avoid those external distractions like music, TV and the fridge
g) Know when enough is enough, don't get sucked in to your home based office because it's there. It can happen easily and soon enough you'll be working endlessly and ignoring the things that really matter like your down time, family and friends.
