Propofol and Plastic Surgery: The Chicken or the Egg?

Was Michael Jackson addicted to drugs or surgery?

Amidst all the conjecture, the fact is, we will never know for sure what happened to Michael Jackson. What has been made clear this week however, was that he was on something, and something strong a few days before he died. This, from an audiotape played during the trial of Dr. Murray, the man accused of killing him with an overdose of propofol. Jackson's speech was so slurred, distorted and sedate on the tape, it was implausible to think that it could have belonged to the King of Pop.

So, I have a theory. Actually, it's more of a question. What if Michael Jackson got hooked on the propofol, or drugs like it, from the having surgery? He was not  being operated on anymore, as far as we know, but apparently was still having propofol administered? What if, after all this time, the drugs were what drove the addiction, not the nips, tucks, implants, reconstructions, etc...? Is it simply too preposterous a thought? I don't know. But, what if it's more common than we think? You know, finding reasons to go under the knife to get that not-a-problem-in-the-world euphoric high. As anyone who has been there knows, it's a journey to a place which is hard, if not impossible, to find any other way. Suddenly going to "Neverland" takes on new meaning.

Imagine it though. What if everyone had Jackson wrong all along? Maybe, he suffered from drug addiction that the plastic surgery concealed. Maybe he was incapable of seeing himself. He wouldn't be the first. Addiction erects blinders. They coat our eyes with thick, black, heavy smoke that allows us only to see the next fix. Granted, they do take away the pain, but at what price? It could actually explain many of the plastic surgery horrors and nightmares of disfigurement that have become all too familiar these days - celebrity and not. I mean, there are a lot of drugs involved after all and extremely good ones at that.

Could anything have changed the course of Michael Jackson's life? Can't say. But what I do know is that he was probably the most naturally gifted performer of all time. A gift we enjoyed as a people for almost 50 years.
