An insider's guide to success in the workplace

Does Obama Know Something We Don’t?

Can we take any more hope?

I wonder if there is more to the President Obama situation than meets the eye. No one can argue that he is losing support at a startling rate. Even the more passionate among his supporters are beginning to question his suitability for office. Yes, there appear to be some flaws, but this is not a dumb guy we are talking about here. And so, like I said, I wonder.

As a rule, politicians shovel so much BS down our throats that it's deafening, and then hand us more when they need to justify their dismal results. And while I don't think that Obama's problem is the hypocrisy of his peers (I think he is genuinely trying to move the needle, as it were.) I'm not alone in wishing he had fought harder to close loopholes integral to the debt ceiling debate, which appeared to be the last straw for many who believed in him. At its heart, the issue wasn't really about winning or losing and the ego of who gave in or not, despite the incessant bickering about just that. It is about creating a level playing field, and reinstituting a sense of fairness into a system that has gone so far askew, it's hard to see any good in it anymore. The whole thing didn't feel right. It was palpable and people knew it.  So after everything Obama had done to restore our national faith, for all intents and purposes, he lost it. But like I said, he is not a dumb guy. I'm thinking there has to be a reason why he let the debate deteriorate to an all-for-nothing outcome.  Surely, he knows the difference between compromise and being walked all over and that trading a malleable attitude for the image of a wuss is not a good idea, let alone presidential.

Personally, I have a sneaking suspicion, or maybe it's wishful thinking. Only time will tell. In the meantime, we do have some comparisons to make - comparisons of actual results. For one, Obama didn't subject us to the constant barking and finger waving that Bush did about how we were going to hunt down Bin Laden and make him pay. Yet, here we are. Done.  Methodical.  Intelligent.  Effective.

Then we had Irene, a world apart from Katrina.  We saw what strategy, planning and communication looks like.   We saw what organized government can do. And sadly, we've also seen the debacles that ensue in their absence.

So in the end, I'd like to believe that Obama really does have a grand plan up his sleeve. He'll right the wrongs. He'll come out swinging, albeit no doubt perfectly timed with the elections.  We'll all have a Rocky moment.  Too much to ask? Not sure. But, a girl can dream, can't she?
