Formication

Formication, essentially a tactile hallucination, is an abnormal skin sensation similar to that of insects crawling over or within the skin. From the Latin formicare meaning to creep like an ant, (not to be confused with fornication!), formication was described in 1890: "A variety of itching, often encountered in the eczema of elderly people. delusional parasiosis

i have a lot of problems with MDs who think they have all the answers. I have a PHD. IT IS THE TERMINAL DEGREE YOU KNOW. When one of my doctors had me on 120 mgs of adderal XR .i also had a PC who dx'd me with staph and cellulitus. Then I was dx'd with norwegian crusted scabies. Being a prof. i researched it so much i began to believe it. my life was a living hell. i begged to see a doctor. by the time i got one, the symptons were gone. Yet two docs thought i was there because I wanted treatment when i only wantred reassurance, Well how convenient. Now they could say i was delusional. i did believe it, and yes, it was probably an autosuggestive delusion...it doesn't matter. i needed help. i was dismissed. one doctor told me that "just because you have a P.H.D doesn't mean you cannot be delusional> I did not file any complaint against my prescriber, she did this very slowly and it was very unexpected. I did file against the dermatologist who failed to treat me for my hair was falling out and i had a brown raah on my forehead. all the board did was quote him, they never ever looked at the tons of evidence i had. i think doctors should not be so arrogant here. there is more to these stories than you realize. stop stereotying us. stop assuming we are wrong. stop lumping us into one category. i am a very smart tenured professor. and i can tell you that i am still reliving the hell of the knowledge that my own mind let me down. and it was temporary and NOT MY FAULT

Formication

I have a problem understanding the concept of formication as a hallucination. I too am a intelligent woman with a masters degree living with symptoms of formication and I constantly asked myself "am I the only person feeling them or is it that I am crazy? After reading your post I was happy that someone agrees with my view on how we are perceived and that there has to be more to this experience of bug crawling. I have recieved psychotropic meds and still have these feelings that is why I continue to research the topic of fornication in hopes that my questions will somehow be answered! Thanks for posting your view.

it is not an hallucination-it

it is not an hallucination-it is real-and i do believe it is from estrogen withdrawl (Menopause) as i have been reading on this-it now makes total sense....it's like having constant poison ivy-and that is not in your mind...

For a "very smart tenured professor" I just need to point out that your use of correct capitalization is absolutely horrid. As is most of your grammar. Also, the word "and" should never be used to begin a sentence.

Just sayin........

Brought to you by a moderately intelligent recipient of a general equivalency diploma. :-l

It is unfortunate...

...that this article fails to mention menopause as a common cause of formication.

Incomplete information can be--and in this case, is--as bad as totally incorrect information, and the author needs to amend this article immediately so that he does not frighten a very large population of boomer women who are currently going through the change.

formication

My 24 year old daughter has been on atdoral for almost a year. About two months ago , she has been complaining about bigs crawling all over her and what she call leisions all over her body. We have taken her to the hopsital twice and of course they don't see anything , nor did her own docter ,who put her on the Atdoral...He should have know this could happen but sent her home with some presciption cream and Cephlexin..She is throwing out all her clothes ,sheet , pillows and blankets because she is seeing bugs and fungus on them..Please help

adderall formication

Hey mom of 24 year old daughter, I too was prescribed stimulants and I too got this formication and yeah, with no explanation by anyone except "you're crazy" I threw out stuff, cleaned, ironed everything and basically drove myself to near despair.

This is truly a horror show, it feels so real and it's relentless, please tell your daughter to get off the adderall, it happens to about 3% of people who take stimulants. It's not an allergy but a reaction of toxicity. Everyone's tolerance is different. I wish I'd had an answer like this but I had to suffer a year before figuring it out myself.

Dr's could have looked in their med book and figured it out early but dozens of dr's appointments and all that was suggested was that I take anti-psychotics. sheesh.

How did you determine your formication was due to toxicity? Toxicity to what? How did you get relief? And how did you get rid of the formication?

i have been having this going on 2 years. to the point of being suicidal. i have no life. i am on estrogen already. yet i still itch and have lesions who take a long time to heal. no one believes that i have anything and am just nervous and picking at my skin making sores. i have been treated with lindane, sulfur drugs, other antibiotics. i also have creams, ointments, you name it i tried it.i could swear i have bugs crawling on me so i make sores all over myself. my body is all scarred up. i would just give up and end my life but i do not want to hurt my grown sons hearts. any suggestions will help. i am at my wits end. i am not on adderal or any of the other drugs.i have secluded myself because i have sores all over and the depression i have when i go out and people stare. i am afraid i will pass it on to somebody.

Re; crept crawly things

Hello anonymous,

I was reading your post and felt very concerned for you because of your overwhelming feelings and comment on suicide I can honestly say that I have been living with these feelings for many years however I've learned to control them through the process of refocusing on other things when the feeling of formication is present. I still don't know what causes this feelng however I can say that changing my thoughts behaviors and actions (cbt) helps me get through the moments when I'm experiencing the overwhelming feelings associated with this unknown phenomenom. To this day people still make fun of my past experiences but they don't understand that this is very real in our lives. Please take care of yourself and try to learn the process of cognitive behavior therapy it has helped me in my most difficult time.

Aiyaaa! So, if formication a

Aiyaaa! So, if formication a hallucination, does that mean that it's psychotic!? Is it always, if you know that it's not real? I get it all the time, but once I look and see that there's no actual bug, I just scratch it lightly until it goes away and forget about it. Of course, sometimes there IS a bug, in which case, I shriek, brush it off, and then forget that, too.;)

Formication from cannabis?

I get it from smoking weed. Does anyone else get this? I've hunted high and low in the research literature for any connection between weed and formication, but it's all about coke, meth, and prescription drugs, none of which I've ever touched. I get it from weed alone. I don't need to smoke much either; I only smoke a tiny ball half the size of my baby fingernail.

I'm afraid that it might be indicative of latent psychosis so I went to a psychiatrist about it. He reacted with great surprise: "You get this from pot!?" He told me to stop smoking the stuff, and I followed his advice, but he didn't know anything about the formication and sent me on my way. I can't escape the fear that it is an undocumented indicator of latent psychosis.

What did you take for estrogen supplement?

What type of estrogen supplement did you take to get rid of your formication?
I have had a hysterectomy over 27 years ago, took estrogen supplements for a year, caused bad side effects, so went off them, and have not taken anything since. Don't do drugs, drink or any vices..... but, in the last 4 years have been getting this bug crawling feeling all over my body, on and off, all the time. My doctor from 3 years ago said I had mites, and gave me a prescription for some cream to apply, then bathe off, but I never filled it. I don't have any bite marks, but am feeling tiny bites here and there, also, but no sign of any bugs........ very strange!

You left out hormones & menopause & PMS

Wow this is such a one-sided article, over-focusing on illegal drug use as the cause, how ridiculous.

Why does this article not also mention or give more time to discussing what every woman in the world experiences: hormone changes. From other research I see that this is linked to hormone change and I have been experiencing it during PMS time for short bursts (under 48 hours) right before the menstrual cycle starts. This began for me in my mid-40s.

This is also seen with estrogen dominance when in pre-menopause if the progeterone levels are not more in synch with the estrogen.

My research also shows this is perhaps a larger problem 1-2 years after the last menstrual cycle in menopause.

By ignoring the hormonal side of the story with 50% of the population and over-focusing on illegal drug use you have painted a very incomplete picture. Shame on you.

(Our society's ignorance about women's hormones and menopause is scary.)

Formication-Menopause not dementia!

I am postmenopausal and I still suffer from it without my HRT! There is so little info on this and how it affects menopause;especially postmenopause. You always hear about hot flashes and also dementia in older women, but I can imagine how many of us were told it was an hallucination, we're demented!Misdiagnosed and stigmatized!
I would think doctors should know better.

I just had my first dream of

I just had my first dream of bugs under my skin. Does that qualify as psychotic. I thought it was just a dream until my friend offered " dellusional formacation ". I've been dog sitting in an home piled high with trash roaches and fleas. My mom came by to bring my son to visit me and she wouldn't sit down. They saw the insect in the house and wouldn't hang around. Nor, would my step- brother. I wouldn't be here if it weren't the family is in a crisis and had no one to help with their animals for four days. I was in a deep sleep. I'm not usually affraid of bugs. I'm a country girl, I think it has just started to get to me. Is the possible? Do I have to go see a doctor over one dream? Granted ,it was bad dream. I don't have any scratch marks on me and don't have the hebeegeebees except for the possibility of being delusional.
Let me know the criterion please
Thanks

Do you have bugs crawling all

Do you have bugs crawling all over/in your body? Have you been to doctor after doctor without relief? Doctors have suggested that you see a therapist because it is a mental problem. Maybe so, maybe not. I think there may be other explanations
which I will not go into now. You have probably looked everywhere for an answer without results. This protocol may work for you, after all you’ve tried everything else.

All I ask in return is that you follow the protocol with a
good honest effort and that you give me feedback at my email – beliefsmatter@gmail.com. I do ask that you keep good written
records of your results and if you give me permission, I would like to include
an anonymous annotation of your results in the paper I am writing.

Protocol:

This protocol is best done when you can be in a quiet setting where you are not likely to be interrupted. Turn off cell phone and other electronic devices.

Do Not do this protocol while you are driving or should be paying attention to what you are doing.

If you have a friend who can guide you through this exercise it will be more effective. Have your friend read through the protocol, several times, out loud, to familiarize
themselves with the language. There are places where you need time to complete the task just described in the protocol and the person taking you through it needs to be observant and pause until you give them a signal that you are ready to proceed. This signal can be a head nod, a verbal O.K. or any other signal you have set up.
Some people are afraid of infecting other people or of being reinfected by others coming into your environment. This protocol can be successfully done over the phone as long as the signals you have set up are verbal, or I have done it over Skype video.

If you would prefer, you can use a voice recorder and read the protocol in your own voice. For some people hearing something in their own voice works better than
having someone else read it for them. For others it’s just the opposite.

If you use a recorder and play it for yourself place some space in the areas where you will be doing something in the visualization, so you can pause the recorder at the appropriate places.

I will use (nod your head) for the signal to continue in the protocol.

For some lucky people this procedure will work like a miracle with just one or two run throughs. ( Do you feel lucky.) For others you may need to do this protocol twice a day for about 4 to 7 days. I don’t know why this happens.

Please take notes.

If you are a spiritual person please ask for guidance, help and healing. If you are not a spiritual person ask for guidance, help and healing anyway. Do this now.

Pause

Allow some time for your body and mind to be comfortable and quiet. Feel yourself relax from the inside out. You may still feel some of the bugs crawling around but to the best of your ability quiet your mind.

Pause and continue when you are as relaxed as possible. (nod your head.)

Now imagine that you can see a large white board a few feet in front of you. When you have it nod your head.

Describe the white board. What color is the frame around the board?
Does it have a tray? Are there markers in the tray, and an eraser? If not put some there.

Now imagine you can see yourself standing in front of the whiteboard facing the board. Describe in detail what you are wearing. What shoes are you wearing? How is your hair done? Etc.

Watch yourself draw a life-sized outline of your body on the board in green. (nod your head). Now pick up the black marker and begin putting in black dots inside the outline in all the places you feel or have felt the bugs in the past.

Pause until finished putting in dots. (nod your head).

Now watch yourself step back a little from the white board to notice if there are any spots that have been forgotten. If so she/he moves up and fills in more until it is
complete. For some people the whole outline will be filled in.

Pause (nod your head).

See that you in front of the white board put the black marker in the tray and pick up the eraser. Have that you start at the right foot and begin to erase the black dots inside the green outline. Be sure not to erase the green outline. Just start with the right foot and move up to the ankle, then up to the knee. Now move over to the
left foot and carefully erase up to the knee on the left leg. (nod your head).

Now move up to the arms and starting with the right hand erase up to the elbow. Then do the same for the left arm. (nod your head).

Erase the rest of the right leg, then the left leg. (nod your head).

Now finish the arms starting with the right arm then the left. (nod your head).

Now erase up the torso from the legs to the neck making sure not to erase any of the green outline. (nod your head).

Now inspect your work and make sure there is nothing left in the legs, arms or torso. Be very diligent in your inspection. You may have to dust off the eraser to make sure. (nod your head).

Start at the neck and carefully begin to erase up and into the head. When you have finished the head inspect your work again. Clean up everything inside the head area. (nod your head).

Now notice if there are any stray marks outside the green border. Look very carefully and clean up any stray marks outside.

Have that you in front of the white board do one last inspection and clean up anything that is left.

Watch as the other you picks up the red marker and draws a bold red circle around the outline of you on the board saying “Ring of Fire”.

Now notice that that you in front of the white board turns around to face you. That she/he has a very satisfied look on his/her face. You hold out your arms to that other you and hug. You feel that other you, the you that cleaned up the board, melts into your own body bringing all the satisfaction and joy of a job well done.

Now notice the white board move back into the distance and out of sight as you begin to become more and more aware of your surroundings. Take a deep breath and look around reorienting yourself back in the here and now. Stand up and put your arms in the air and do a little dance to celebrate.

Now notice ANY changes and write them down. If you need to repeat this exercise you will simply set and relax and bring the white board back into view and repeat the process. If not, Great.
Track your adventure in writing and send it to me at – beliefsmatter@gmail.com.

Please remember I need feedback from those for which this protocol doesn’t work well. Any feedback is deeply appreciated.

It’s been a long journey for you and I wish you a wonderful
new life.
