How materialistic are you? Dr Tomas' latest blog examines how personality makes some people more materialistic than others. Read More

Origin of materialism is dominance
In my books, eg, Who am I, I point out that animals show clear dominant traits. In humans this is manifested as the traits of will -- leadership, achievement, competence motivation. Unlike animals, humans can pass dominance along in the form of money, title, and possessions. The valuation of domiannce based on money is manifested as status-seeking. Materialism is a trait that satisfies the life motive for status, which originated as a variant of dominance.
The reason we need to distinguish between status versus power as two human variants of dominance is because some people care. Royals are idle precisely to say they merit attention without having to acheive anything. On other hands, there have been many men of achievement who have belittled the importance of royals and high society based on birth.
Psychometrically, dominance and materialism are correlated in the .4 to .5 level, which is quite high, and supports the idea of a common origin.
