More Than Mortal

The science of the human quest for meaning, significance, and self-transcendence.

More Evidence that Finding Purpose Reduces Risk of Mortality

Purpose in life is linked to mortality among adults of all ages

In a previous post, I highlighted recent research indicating that the more people perceive their lives as full of meaning and purpose, the longer they live.  A new study to be published in an upcoming issue of Psychological Science further evidences the importance of purpose.

In this study, researchers replicated past findings that people who have a sense of purpose live longer. Critically, this new research demonstrated that this link between purpose and mortality exists across all adult age groups. Purpose is a significant predictor of mortality even among young adults. In other words, adults of all ages who lack a sense of purpose are more likely to die.

Findings such as these highlight the importance of having a clear sense of purpose in life. Find what makes you feel like your life has direction and meaning as research continues to indicate that having a purpose in life may end up saving your life.
