Semrad proved clinically what philosophers seek to explain logically: delusions are not just about faulty cognitions or biological abnormalities (though they usually involve both) - they also involve something more deeply human, a basic existential fault, perhaps, reminding us that even in the most severely ill psychiatric patients, our clinical work involves - first and foremost - contacting the person beneath the patient, and saying hello. A Smile Can Change The World
When someone's ego screams in pain
From internalized devils that tortured Cain
Choose not to engage them with yours
For those devils lead to illness and wars
Instead...
May your smile touch the depths of someone's despair
And restore faith and hope in those found there
Courageous honesty, love, compassion, and forgiveness- Pass These On
Paradise, The Garden of Eden, exists and was here all along
The World Needs More Semrads
Hello. My name is Kelly and I'm sending you a smile. :) or two :) or three :). The world needs more Semrads. I'm in if you are.
Indeed the world needs more
Indeed the world needs more Semrads, Kelly, though I have a suspicion he was one of a kind, rising from the fields of Nebraska to enlighten the rest of us.
His closest student was probably Leston Havens, my teacher, and both Semrad and Havens had an enormous impact through teaching generations of Boston residents. Semrad wrote little, but Havens, now in his eighties and retired, wrote and lectured wonderfully. His books are the best source, I think, for passing along the Semrad legacy: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywor...
See also www.lestonhavensmd.com where there are plans to upload some of his lectures and interviews.
I will write more about Les Havens too.
But the torch is falling; someone needs to pick it up from Semrad and Havens, and it will be hard, very hard, to live up to their examples.
I thank those of you who commented here; the response to this blog posting has been suprising and incredibly heartening. There seems to be a truth here that connects, and that needs to be nurtured.
Be the Hero
Pick up the torch and be the hero you envision yourself to be. Find the courage to grow out of the shell you define yourself to be. Then fly up high and dare!
You have the genius to effect responsible change. Why hold it back? Unleash it!
I could weave a beautiful
I could weave a beautiful tale/tail around the greeting "Happy New Year 1388" for it has some personal meaning to me. What does it mean to others? I think this article about Semrad will prove to be a useful stepping stone as it mirrors some of my own thinking. When I was in college taking Existentialism I thought that if I ever took a leap of faith I would know that I was crazy since there was a family history of "mental illness." Once I, too, was labelled crazy, it was much easier to reach out and believe in something more when help was needed. But it was lonely. So I would say "Hello" to anyone who is reading this. A mental patient.
