Never Mind Casey Anthony: Tune Into Your Self

I really did not have to watch Nancy Grace mouth Cindy Anthony's words to her daughter Casey (for what seemed like) at least 30 times in a one-hour broadcast. Cindy's motherly "I love you"-to a daughter who may be a murderer-does not rate the number of repetitions Grace gave it. But as an attorney and a health & wellness expert, I watch trials like Casey Anthony's, and the legal and psychological commentary, with fascination. There are such complex psyches and relationships involved, and the twists and turns of the prosecution and defense teams capture my attention. But I do know when it's time to turn off the TV and tune in to the vast peace of meditation.

I've been meditating every single day for over 30 years, and I can't imagine my life without it. Getting absorbed in the internal sound of my mantra, I connect to the unlimited and unconditional state of being where knowledge, truth, and bliss reside. Peace permeates my mind and body. The constant stress of a very busy life is released. Love and gratitude flood my heart. Then I'm ready to face another day with the energy and openness I need to help others heal from the sorrows and traumas of their lives.

The world is full of pain. Children are murdered. Houses are foreclosed upon. Floods and tornadoes wreak havoc. Trust is betrayed and hearts broken. And liars seem to be proliferating-from cover-ups of misdeeds, as in Anthony Weiner's "someone hacked my account" to explains his "sexts," to a long string of lies by various politicians about infidelity, to major financial liars like Bernie Madoff, to possible liars like Lance Armstrong about doping.

Where is truth? Where is relief from images of a child's skull and duct tape? Right inside your Self. All you have to do is spend a little time getting there every day. It's cheap. No plane tickets or expensive fill-er-up's at the gas station necessary.

Meditation is not hard to do. It just takes steady repetition, which is why it's called meditation practice. It's hard to understand how powerful it is from the outside looking in. When you see Julia Roberts meditating in "Eat Pray Love," you can't tell what's going on. It looks static, even boring. But what's happening on the inside is a compelling drama, a startling comedy, a revelation. Maybe not at first, but keep it up.

Learn from a qualified teacher, in person if possible. Take a short meditation retreat and get the technique down. Your explorations will fascinate you; it's an internal adventure of the highest order, a scientifically-verified way to induce well-being and emotional balance.
