There are many environmental influences on our psychological health and marketing practices are an important category. While I am not "anti-business," I am strongly public policy oriented. To declare big business and government in control is to deny our growing consumer empowerment. It is also the path to feelings of helplessness. Marketing is a potent force in our society and consumers have input to it, although this influence is yet to be fully realized. For example, if everyone (and I do mean everyone) were to stop eating white bread tomorrow, in one year there would be no white bread on shelves in stores. THAT is empowering. Naturally, this sort of consensus is unlikely but there are still opportunities. My objective will to be to share research and thinking that informs our understanding of the relationship between marketing and psychology.
