In "Black Swan," I was most compelled by the portrait of eating disorders, body image distortions, and archetypal co-mingling of the polaries: reality/illusion, light/dark, perfection/imperfection, and domineering stage/mothers/frightened little girls. I see these issues too often in dancers and young girls with eating disorders (Serlin, 2005). Read More

Wrong, totally wrong.
I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with the theory that eating disorders are solely the result of OCD or anxiety issues. I feel like this attitude is damaging to those suffering with an eating disorder. I've had an eating disorder for 8 years. I feel as if I know more than you, Natalie Portman (has a degree in psychology), or any other professional who has not lived through eating disorders. With me personally, it IS about the weight. For most young women I know, IT IS ABOUT THE WEIGHT ISSUE. Do you REALIZE how brainwashed we all are? Nobody wants to blame the media or external factors for eating disorders because EVERY ONE OF US IS A CONSUMER OF THE MEDIA. That would make everyone guilty, and nobody wants to feel guilty. It's about the weight. The media is now pushing the idea that "fit" is in, but still uses images of extremely thin women (and men), and tells us that they're healthy. Bullshit. I run 3 miles a day (on top of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day), 5 days a week. I do that WITH an eating disorder (800kcals a day unless I purge). And these women are still thinner than I am? Come on. That's not healthy. It's even brainwashed the young straight men in their twenties. I spoke to a couple yesterday who congratulated each other on never dating/having sex with a girl who weighed more than 120lbs. What, did they make them get on a scale before they screwed them? I guess my point is this: stop saying you know what eating disorders are about. You don't. It's different for every sufferer. Get your head out of your ass and live it before you say it's about "anxiety" or obsessive compulsive disorder. It IS about weight for most sufferers. Believe me. Maybe if I had an expensive, shiny Ph.D, people would listen to me.
Thanks for your comment
Hello,
I'm sorry if it seemed that I was saying that eating disorders are solely the result of ODC or anxiety disorders....not at all. They are very complex, and you have described your own situation very clearly and eloquently.
Thank you for taking the time to clarify this.
With best regards,
Ilene
