Singlism: What It Is and Is Not, and Why It Should Be in the Dictionary

I coined the term ‘singlism' in 2005. Now, a Google search returns nearly 5,000 results. So what does ‘singlism' actually mean, and why was the person using the term incorrectly when saying, "Thank you Jesus for the wonderful gift of singlism"? I think ‘singlism' should be in the dictionary, and I'll make my case using the criteria Oxford and Merriam-Webster are believed to use. Read More

the one problem I've had with

the one problem I've had with word is that at first glance (to me anyway) it seems like it means a pro-single ideology, such as "feminism."

I also wish there were a way to use marital status, because for some reason it seems like it would be taken more seriously.

good point

That's a good point about feminism. Another complicating analogy is heterosexism, which names the mindset of the prejudice rather than the people getting targeted. Some play on marital status would have been best, but I never could come up with just the right thing.

TRUTHINESS

Stephen Colbert used "truthiness" and he landed in the dictionary pretty quickly. I think you should get on the Colbert Report (one of my favourite shows) and have it out with him! You are smart but he is loud and seldom listens so it would make for a great debate. I would definitely tune in for that! Good post as always!

thanks!

I would so love to be on Colbert! I always thought Singled Out would be perfect for him to mock (or fake-mock), but alas, no such luck.

Wiki article

I've poked around a lot in Wikipedia and I think an article on Singlism would be nice. I have used and while it takes a bit of adjustment, it isn't hard, espeically if you're used to doing computer word processing, blogs, etc.

thanks!

I keep thinking I'm going to do something like this, but I never quite get to it.

Wiktionary

Wikipedia in fact has a companion website called Wiktionary - the free dictionary http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Main_Page

Maybe the definition of singlism (and singlist?) would be more appropriately entered there?

I haven't read their inclusion criteria, but it looks like you have already gathered a fair bit of evidence re. widespread usage of singlism as a word.

didn't know about that

thanks for the tip!
