A few weeks ago, I mentioned my plan to give my Valentine's Day love to blogs, websites, groups, and listservs that promote thoughtful and consciousness-raising perspectives on singles, or that engage in advocacy or education on behalf of singles. I invited your nominations. Thanks to everyone who responded. The list is below. Please let me know of any others that should be added. It was heartening to me (Valentine's Day pun intended) to discover or rediscover all of the wonderful voices out there, and the many people and groups doing their share to pull us out of the dark ages of singlism and matrimania and into a more enlightened era. It also made me feel grateful for the era of the internet. As too much of the mainstream media lavishes its attention on regressive messages, we can create our own ruckus.
So, check out this list. Among some of the recent gems, you will find a brilliant critique of what the New York Times sees as the significant implication of women outnumbering men on college campuses (from our friends at Onely), a brief, heart-stopping exchange about "life's greatest prize" from the ever-insightful Wendy Braitman at First Person Singular, and Rachel's always-incisive analyses over at Rachel's Musings, such as this one on wives supposedly out-earning husbands. Thanks, too, to Rachel for encouraging the use of Happy Quirkyalone or Happy Quirkytogether salutations instead of the more conventional nod to Valentine's Day.

Also, one of the new groups I discovered in putting together this list is the National Singles Association. The National Singles Foundation is part of it. Most of their plans appear to be in the preliminary stages, but they look promising. From their website:
National Singles Foundation is a nonprofit organization. Our mission is to support singles and the communities in which they live in the following ways:
- Help Singles in transition such as premarital coaching, divorce recovery, split family counseling.
- Educate singles on safety and security techniques to include assault and rape prevention at home, work, and while traveling.
- Increase voter education as only 35% of Singles vote.
- Assist Singles that are victims of natural disasters
- Help Single parents balance work and life through education, training and childcare assistance.
- Fight to reduce discrimination in Housing, Business Practices, and Governmental Regulation.
- Encourage community involvement through activism while supporting national and local charties.
