Well because the American dream sees them as dropouts. Because the standardization of human behaviour loves the average and fears people who are different.
I am living in Europa and I've been in the US the whole last year and despite the many countries I have been in, in the US you have to fight hardest to be an individual. US freedom is not for free.
Single candidate
I agree; it will be a very long time before we see a single as presidential candidate. The majority of Americans relate more to "family" men and women, not only because many of them have families themselves, but also because many of the single people want to eventually end up having families so they admire this type of person. The sad truth is that there are probably too few happily single people to make them count in politics.
Singles on stage
We at Onely were noticing the same phenomenon regarding candidates parading their families--but not their friends--onstage. Lisa may possibly blog about this in the future because she has some interesting Onely ideas about Hillary's candidacy. Thanks for flagging Cherlin's article. I appreciate his attempt to praise diversity and think it's only a matter of time before similar articles also include single people in their lists of different "types." Maybe. = )
