No one wants to read this essay. I surely did not look forward to writing it, but I live and teach in Charlottesville, Virginia, a place called home for four years by Yeardley Love, a lacrosse player, stellar student, and the breath of grace in countless lives. Her life ended, literally, at the hands of a male lacrosse player. A deafening silence surrounds brutality aimed at girls and women. Read More

Sick and tired
I am just so worn out with every section of humanity feeling the need to slice off their own section instead of looking at ways to meld together more cohesively. I have never seen the Us vs Them mentality operate without unforeseen collateral damages.
I think any action(s) taken without considering impacts for all humans and selecting the least harmful until a balance is accorded in an unknown number of cycles will be prone to creating chaos.
A widened perspective beyond that which you would normally be comfortable.
Could it be possible that you
Could it be possible that you feel threatened by this article?
Violence against Women
It's too bad the term "hate crime" can apply to racial, ethnic, sexual oriention and the like, but not to misogyny and the violence it engenders.
I find it sickening when I
I find it sickening when I hear about men wanting younger and younger girls for sex or physical pleasure. I watched to catch a predator the other night and saw that the men knew it was wrong to have dirty chats and want to meet to try to have sex with a young girl or even boy. But the only reason why they said it was wrong, was because it's against the law to do what they did, not because it's simply just wrong. If the law is the only thing that's stopping these predators, then our children our in trouble. Some of these predators going after young girls have daughters of their own or work with young girls. What's worse is thinking about what kind of women would mate with theses monsters. I always say there's red flags always being shown to us but most of us refuse to see them or see them with hindsight. In the matter of the Yeardly Love case, I bet he had red flags that she or anyone that knew her should have seen. But we also live in an age where bad boys seem to have an appeal, they're cool, sexy and exciting, and hey if it doesn't work out with the bad boy I'll simply just break up with him. Not knowing that the bad boy may not like that idea and may do something to harm her.
"Is the only good man a dead
"Is the only good man a dead man?" My question: Is it possible that you feel threatened, and if so, can you tell me why?
My question: Is it possible that you're unable to defend a statement, you instead try to attack egos with Psych 101 buzzwords?
- Agree with "anonymous" I
- Agree with "anonymous"
I agree that while there has been a history in humanity to hold men higher than women for whatever reason, this is going away on a large scale (while the problem will obviously still exist). My point is this: posting long angry rants that don't paint an accurate depiction of the WHOLE picture are just continuing the thought that women are inferior. In the case of Yeardley/Huguely, he was drunk and beat her up. This isn't a red flag saying that all men beat up women, THAT is a sterotype.
I agree with the last two
I agree with the last two posts. I cannot see any credibility to this post at all. McCarty must be strongly against men (or seems like there was an incident in the past to have her feel this way, post seems kind of personal with words of anger) and very one-tracked minded for an author who wrote a philosophy book. Also the song referenced "Whoop that Trick" is talking about a trick which is a man who patronizes a prostitute.
Apparently personal accounts
Apparently personal accounts & teaching are not credible enough for your taste. That is fine & well, don't state that it lacks credibility as though that were an indisputable fact TYVM. Your opinion is just that, and nothing more.
Relax people
That's right, just don't talk about it and it will go away. Any therapist can tell you that refusing to discuss issues in your personal life will not help them just go away. So if it doesn't work in our individual lives how can it work in society as a whole? The point of philosophy is to ask questions that invoke discussion. Not talking about sexism isn't going to make it go away. Some punk beats up and kills his girlfriend because she made him mad. Why can't that lead to a discussion of sexism or spousal abuse without the person who askes the questions being attacked? Sometimes it is benificial to take a look at the big picture and talk about what is wrong with our society. How else can things change? By ignoring the issues?
Full Agreement
I agree that no one wants to read this essay, people would rather try and forget that violence against women happens. But we cannot as human beings ignore the fact that women across the world are being attacked domestically and sold into slavery. In order for this issue to be resolved more people need to be enlightened about violence against women in order for actions against the offenders to take place.
The people that mocked this
The people that mocked this issue are afraid of what might happen if society DID change. How a normal human being wouldn't be appalled at the various stories in this article is beyond me. Then again, perhaps one of the biggest problems that leads to these situations is just that, t]at people have somehow lost their sense of humanity.
Change does not happen on its own. People are responsible for setting it into motion with their actions.
Let's not fall victim to ignorance and contentedness with a system that is so wrong.
Feminism is NOT chauvinism
McCarty didn't say all men were bastards, she stated that we as a society collectively have a very perturbing issue. Which we do, plain and simple.
We tend to find blame in the prey more often than the predictor.
Anonymous aat May 19. Why
Anonymous aat May 19. Why would you say the author has a problem with all men? She didn't say so nor did she imply it (at least this was my reading). The problem with discussing violence against women is that men get defensive, as if they were being personally blamed for it. Why does this happen? In my experience, most men would rather deny that violence against women exists or minimize the extent of its impact. Its like men and women experience two different realities. Is it because men in general cannot empathise with women? Or is it because it makes them feel guilty and powerless. The way I see it, men should be doing everything they can to prevent violence against women, since all men are fathers, brothers, sons and husbands (of women)
Its in men's collective interests to work with women to end violence against women since it impacts the women in their lives. But, sadly, most men don't think this way. They choose male solidarity over keeping women safe from harm.

Just a look at some of the comments here is proof that this essay needed to be written. I am still sometimes shocked at how little humanity has really progressed.
