Lying to yourself about the future is one thing but lying to yourself about the past is perhaps even more problematical since ultimately you will be unable to distinguish reality from fantasy. In sport there is the well known cliche " The older I get the better I was. " That might not be a major problem (except to those who actually remember how good you weren't.) but in relationships and careers this kind of distorted false memory is absolutely lethal.
