Welcome to Laughing Stock, a Humor Blog

Please allow me to awkwardly introduce myself and share a joke about waffles.

Hello, Psychology Today blog world. I am a comedy librarian.

Well, that's what my friend Neil calls me, and I'll try to live up to that title in this blog. I'll be looking at new and old humor in plenty of genres: TV, movies, stand-up, Twitter, humor pieces, comic books, etc. If it's funny, I might write about it.

I'll also talk about my own attempts at humor. I write a metric buttload of jokes every day on Twitter, and I write humor pieces for places like Bygone Bureau. I have a column for McSweeney's where I analyze jokes. I also write sketch comedy: last year I wrote an entire sketch show called Nachos... From the Abyss, and I'm in the middle of co-writing a show called Reasons to be Cheerful with Shane Swinnea. In this column, I'll talk about these various attempts at humor and try to puzzle out what worked, what didn't, and why. What makes things funny is often as mysterious as the location of the Ark of the Covenant, but I'll try to make some interesting guesses, informed by experience, about those mysteries.

Since this is getting a little explain-y, I'll leave you with a tweet by Ted Travelstead, who I recently wrote about at length:

"My exercise boot camp instructor eats a hot waffle off your back while you do pushups. That's why I smell like syrup."

Travelstead's self-described "word pictures" are an approach to humor I love. Without a traditional set-up and punchline, they're like portals to another reality, and Thor knows we could all use more realities. Travelstead is a travel agent of the weird.

Anyway, I hope you'll join me as I talk humor. And hot waffles. But mostly humor.
