Speed-dating doesn't allow enough time to make optimal long-term mate choices. More personal interaction might alter the conclusions of the participants.
The experimental design was faulty if it was used to draw conclusions about long-term mate selection criteria. The speed-dating experiment was more useful for identifying second-date selection criteria.
Another explanation: people
Another explanation: people with better personalities were perceived as more attractive. To isolate the role of looks, we'd need a separate control group to rate photographs of the participants. Personality comes out when you see someone in real life through the way they move and their facial expressions.
