Better health the natural way.

Why Is Grass-Fed So Important?

While "natural" and "antibiotic/hormone-free" sound just fine, they are hardly better than typical meat products. Read More

benefits of grassfed beef

I am a veterinarian, a rancher producing grassfed beef, a beef processor, direct marketer of our beef, pork and chicken raised on our family farm and mother of 6.
You might say I have a bias but it is with years of experience have produced beef the industrial way and now the grassfed way. Grassfed is a system that is better for the animals, better for the land and better for you.

Grassfed beef is higher in omega 3 fatty acids but it is the omega 3: omega 6 ratio that makes grassfed especially healthy. Grassfed is also higher in vitamin E, higher in CLA, higher in beta carotene and lower in cholesterol and saturated fats.

Raised on open pasture, a 100% forage diet, no antibiotics, no hormones and high animal welfare makes grassfed awesome!

Thank you Dr. Patricia for the insight. In my opinion, your 'bias' is substantiated by strong research. Thank you for putting out great information and high quality food we can trust - peter

Grass Fed

Hi Tom - absolutely. that should have been the first place I mentioned. Living in the NY City area, I do pick up meats from the farmer's market in Union Square very regularly. Thank you for the reminder. Where is Wriggins Hilltop Farm?

Grassfed vs Grainfed Meats

While grassfed is better for both personal health and the health of the donor, i.e. the slain animal, a plant-based diet is healthier for both. In the country and around the world, we really need to reassess our consumption of animals. The cost of raising the animals in agricultural (raising the corn and grain), environmental (water usage and soil destruction from over-grazing), and ethical (concentrated animal feeding operations - CAFOs) terms is staggering. Add to that the exorbitant usage of antibiotics that end up in humans, and you have a global disaster in the making. We need to eat more plants for our personal health and the health of the plant.

Grassfed vs Grainfed Meats

thank you Anonymous, a very good point I did not raise in the article. Seventy percent of antibiotics used in the world are used on livestock as growth promoters. There is no question that the health of our planet, the health of the animal world, and the health of most people would do far better if we ate far less meat. Having said that, having seen many people in my practice over 9 years, I do believe some people really do better eating meat. For this subset (most are type O blood type), even these people should still be eating more plants than anything else. And, my hope is that when people eat animals, we treat the animals very well, appreciate and bless the animals, and use the whole animal for good purposes, as the native American traditions have taught us. Thank you again for bringing up these important concerns.
