Sad as Ever

Today, the central questions at the intersection of psychiatry and culture seem to concern diagnosis. A number of books have appeared on the subject, each claiming that the medical professions have pathologized normality—making illnesses of unhappiness, shyness, and boyish impulsivity. Read More

I'm ao pleased with the early postings on thie blog. You have a good mind on these topics, and I find myself interested in whatever you're finding to be interesting. Clear, thoughtful, useful, well-considered ideas. Thanks so much.

Situational saddness vs depression

I think there is a distinction to be made here, but if the situational sadness does not remit after a certain period of time and interferes with activities of daily living, well, I think you may have a treatable clinical depression developing. By treatable I mean by talk therapy and/or medication. One does not have to stay on medication forever either. The usual, I believe, is to be on it for as long as the symptoms have persisted, then re-evaluate the need. Makes sense to me. I know there is a movement that wants to dis-credit the mental health care delivery system over all, but I think in general it is a sensible system. A group of over prescribing Doc's, bad outcomes, and media over load have tarnished the perceptions people have of how diagnosis and treatment works. Just MHO.

Depression/Suicide

I enjoy this site. Odd thing, I have more wonderful things in my life, but all of and even now, I live as is I have no hope.

Suicide haunts my every thought. You would think at 53, I would have grown out of it.
