The Tepid Pool? -- Choices We Make in Connecting with Nature

There's a mountain pool that you find hiking up the wild river. The water emerges into it from porous volcanic rock. The water flows from the cold country. It's too cold to plunge in. But you're in. You're in because your lover is nearby and you need to prove your manly-hood.... Read More

The natural pool that must be saved

Dr. Kahn, you nailed it! I'm co-chair of The Preserve Graydon Coalition, the group working to save the pool under discussion, in Ridgewood, NJ. (For information and great photos, see PreserveGraydon.org.) A member of our group told us at our meeting tonight that a local blog had posted your article, and I couldn't wait to get home and read it. I've sent it to our environmental attorney as well. THANK YOU for seeing straight through to the heart of the matter. Nature builds physical and psychological resilience in children and boosts the immune system. Our beachy setting provides sand/water play, a quintessential aspect of the place that would disappear with a concrete pool, whose filters sand would destroy (and thus sand would be banned). We hope your readers will consider joining our mailing list and signing our petition. Maybe our five-member Village Council, in whose hands the future of Graydon lies, would be responsive to comments from experts in the field. Our website provides the appropriate email addresses. Come visit if you come to the East Coast!

Hope you succeed!

Marcia: Thanks for the update on your wonderful efforts, which I hope succeed. I do think there is a scientific and psychological argument in your favor -- that these more natural connections with nature are better for us physically and psychologically. It's not just a matter of aesthetics. Re: your environmental attorney. Some years ago I was a little bit involved with Earth Justice, as they were involved in litigation over the logging of the Tongass National Forests. As I recall the situation, a local town in Alaska had charged that by closing the mills the situation would harm the children in the town economically. I spoke about how destroying the local forests would harm the children psychologically. As I understand, the argument held some sway. I wonder if your attorney could make a similar move? --Peter

Legal advice: argue pro natura

Hi, Dr. Kahn. The psychological argument is one that I've been making all along. We just needed some experts to weigh in, and your paper is a superlative start; a member of our group has given copies to our Council and others. I have also forwarded your suggestion to our attorney, Stuart Lieberman (liebermanblecher.com). Please keep sending positive vibes our way. Best regards, Marcia

Good luck in saving the natural pool!

Marcia,
I am glad the work that Peter and I offered at the NAAEE Conference may help you with your efforts to save the natural swimming hole at Graydon. Such natural places and the experiences they offer are becoming increasing rare. Best of luck in your efforts to save this place in your community for future generations.- Pat Hasbach, Ph.D.

One week ago, on May 11, the only two candidates for two open seats on Ridgewood's Village Council who wish to preserve Graydon won a tough election by a landslide. Our group had endorsed them and worked mightily in the election. They will take office on July 1.

Our expectation is that the "most endangered" designation by an objective statewide organization will support the newly reconfigured Council in protecting and enhancing Graydon.

These two important "wins" give us hope and energy to continue working toward our goal.
