Homo Consumericus

The nature and nurture of consumption.

Death of Common Sense Will Spell the End of Free Societies.

Postmodernism, deconstructionism, cultural relativism, political correctness, and an ethos of collective self-guilt constitute the perfect brew for creating the collapse of Western liberal democracies. Read More

I agree, but...

How do you propose we "eradicate them from the public discourse"?

This reminds me of a class I just finished at the University of Toledo conducted by Donald Pribor, titled "Biological Aspects of the Human Consciousness". He has theories about how Chaos and Order are intertwined and that we are going through a period of Chaos. If we keep at it and don't bring about Order, he posits the same outcome as you. Here is a link to his book: http://new.ecampus.com/book/9780757571442

He has been a professor for 40+ years.

I don't think legislating is the answer. Is education reform?

I wonder what your thoughts are.

Here is a general prescription.

Many thanks for your thoughts. There was a time period when all sorts of outlandish beliefs were the norm (e.g., slavery). Through the slow and repeated attacks on such world views, they were eventually eradicated. The exact same process needs to happen here. If one of your professors is spewing nonsensical babble about these anti-science movements, challenge him/her. At every turn, such lazy, intellectually dishonest, and morally bankrupt positions must be confronted. Eventually, pseudo-intellectual affectations associated with these movements will appear outdated and erroneous, and they'll accordingly crumble. This is already happening on university campuses where there is lesser tolerance for postmodernist drivel. Politicians and the media need to be held to the same exacting standards of reason.

I was a bit unclear

My professor sees it the same way you do. He is touting that we need to change from the manichean way to a more scientific way that allows for modifying thoughts as more information is available. I think you would be interested in his thoughts.

Keep up the good work.

Thank you.

Spread the word!

Sometimes common sense isn't very common

Sokal's exercise was a great example of Poe's Law in action.

And of course the first thing feminism did was outlaw thinking.

Poe's Law...I love it.

Thank you for sharing.

This is a really well written

This is a really well written and bring up some frightening ideas well worth pondering. Delusional thinking, apparently, isn't just found amongst drug addicts and religious fanatics anymore. And it's about time someone called feminists on their anti-academic ideas.

Good to see something that doesn't cheerlead feminism in PT. Let's see more.

Thank you for the kind words.

I am happy to hear that you enjoyed my post. Keep reading!

Of course...

... for most men, from Afghanistan to the US, it follows from "women bear children" that women are second-class or lesser humans and that because of their biological function, they should not enjoy all kinds of freedoms and privileges that men are routinely accorded.

ugh...

it takes a LOT of "education" to make someone this stupid

The Emperor Is Bare-Ass Naked

And thank you so much for being one of the (too) few to point it out.

My pleasure!

Thank you Amy for covering my post on your blog. I read many of the comments posted on your blog, some of which were hilarious. Have a good evening.

If nothing has real meaning...

... it would have been fun, and maybe instructional, after she ordered her food, to find the waiter and bribe him to serve her something other than what she ordered, and then watch what happens.

You wanted a hamburger...that's an arbitrary label!

I got you raw celery instead. :)

...wish I was at the dinner.

...wish I was at the dinner. Whoa! Coulda been fun.

The inanity this hypocrisy is revealed every time a postmodernist goes to the dentist to deal with a toothache.

You would have enjoyed it although it was maddening!

How about when postmodernists get on a plane to deliver their nonsensical babble at a conference? Or perhaps when they use their laptops to generate the random gibberish that masquerades as eloquent profundity? Predictable scientific phenomena allows them to diffuse their charlatanism.
