Why Do We Love Our Pets?

I left town for a business trip last week, and life is always more complicated during those few days before travel. Outfits have to be planned, cleaned, and packed. Newspaper service had to be stopped and arrangements made to have mail picked up. Editors and colleagues had to be notified of my absence, deadline extensions (in a few cases) have to be asked for. Love Gwen and Homer!

Yay! I'm glad you have a spot here, Gwen. PT just got a little more fun. :)

Love this!

Great addition... looking forward to seeing more from you!

Thanks!

Thanks, guys! I'm really excited to be here. Thanks so much for reading! :-)

Enjoyed your article.

Enjoyed your article. Looking forward to more.

Loved the column

Great first column, Gwen. I'm looking forward to many more interesting topics. Thanks.

I made the heart-wrenching

I made the heart-wrenching decision to surrender my cat due to her illnesses and she later passed away. She rests in an urn in my home watching over me each day. It's been awhile since I've allowed myself to reminisce about the joys of my past with her because it's been too painful. Your article gently reminded me of how wonderfully enhanced life can be with a furry friend. My cat was always there for me: if I was troubled, she'd sit on my head as if to absorb my problems, she waited for me on the other side of the door each night I came home meowing with anticipation to see me, and her silent treatment upon any return after a vacation from kitty made me feel so important to this furry being. I look forward to reading articles you may write in the future.

I am so glad to see Gwen

I am so glad to see Gwen writing for PT. What a great collaboration!

I am so glad to see you here,

I am so glad to see you here, too, Gwen! It's like double-dipping! Loved the column -- but then I love EVERYTHING you write!

My heart goes out to Anonymous, I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my Bud two years ago and I probably should have ended his suffering sooner but selfishly I did not want to let him go. He and my other cat, Beans, who passed in 2005, both reside in little urns in a special spot on top of a little shelf in my spare room with their picture book and some other things that remind me of them. They were my best little pals who loved me no matter what. Int his way I can feel theya re still with me in some small way.

(sigh)

kisses and head-butts to all,

Hello

Good blog Gwen. I am looking forward to future installments. I agree with Temple Grandin, PhD, that "Animals Make Us Human", in many ways. Forgive me for plugging the book, but it has much to say, and I very much enjoyed the section on cats. You, too, have much to say, and I am excited to read more.
I agree with Kristen. My heart, too, goes out to Anonymous. I hope there is another furry friend in your future, Anon. If not in your own home, perhaps in the home of a friend.
Peace and Love to all,
Judy,

I really like your new blog Gwen

Gwen I really think you have a great blog here and hope you continue here. I certainly agree with you as to why we love our pets as they give so much to us and my heart also goes out to Anonymous as it is never easy losing a beloved pet whatever it might be, be it cat, dog or whatever. I know when our beloved pets died we had a choice too of having them cremated and then returned to us but for us that would be too hard on us and make us sad every day. So instead we told them to cremate their bodies and have their ashes spread in a pet cemetery. I think really there is no right or wrong way to do that and everyone has to make that decision for themselves but for us this was best. Time though they say heals all wounds and while it still hurts to think of our loved furry ones not being here any longer it doesn't hurt as much as it did. In time our house may yet have a new pet I can't really say but if not we will still keep our friends close to our hearts always. I hope Anonmyous finds peace.

Gwen will bring me back to PT :-)

Hey Gwen... Remember me? The lady who "saved the day" during your trip to BCR? :-)

Anyway, I haven't had much time to follow your blogs lately and unfortunately have missed out on some cool giveaways, but I'm glad to see you here! I actually used to subscribe to PT back when I was a Psyc major in college as it was fun to read psychology applications. I'm not quite sure how I let my subscription laspse, but now that I'm in the real world and have my own furbabies who keep my sanity, I'll definitely enjoy your blog and a return to PT. :-)

love

this is really describtive and amazing! Thanks for the info.!

Not one to ever comment on a blog, I had to respond to yours. Like minds and all that. I was looking on the net for articles on Why we love our pets. Yours seemed most real to me. And you are dead on in regards to the Why of it. You are never alone when you have your pets. Look forward to more insights on this subject.
