How to Write from the Inside Out

Psychotherapy for screenwriters

Though this column usually addresses the psychological dilemmas facing all types of creative people in Hollywood---actors, writers, directors, etc.---this one is aimed squarely at my TV- and film-writing readers.

Not too long ago, I was a guest on “ScriptNotes,” a popular podcast featuring two noted screenwriters, John August and Craig Mazin. Their program is noted for offering clear, no-nonsense advice to screen and TV writers, whether dealing with creative challenges or the “business” side of show business.

I think it’s great that two such busy, successful Hollywood professionals would offer this kind of support to both new and veteran writers. Which was why I was happy to join them for a free-wheeling, hour-long interview concerning the common psychological issues---blocks, procrastination, fear of rejection, etc.---with which most writers struggle.

And, despite my disclaimer at the beginning of this post, I believe that creative people of all stripes might find something of interest and to their benefit in the interview. At least, I hope so!

Anyway, in response to those who’ve heard about the podcast and desire a link, or just want to hear it again, here it is:

As always, your comments and questions are most welcome! I also invite you to forward the link to any friends, family or colleagues who might be interested. Thanks!
