At some point early on in a Hollywood career--whether an actor, writer or director--a person has to come to terms with rejection. I ought to know. Prior to becoming a licensed psychotherapist, I spent 17 years as a screenwriter. Now, in addition to my private practice, I write novels and columns like this, so I certainly have a very clear view of rejection--I hate it. Read More

I like this article!
Dennis Palumbo you made me smile! =) You wrote for Welcome Back, Kotter? I liked that show. Who was the guy with the horselaugh?
Horshack
The character was named Arnold Horschack, played by Ron Pullilo. Thanks for writing, and I hope you'll check in on my column again.
Love Your Article on Rejection
This is a wonderful article. As an HSP, I definitely do not like rejection and find people who do not mind to be annoying at best. I love your solution, however. It makes sense - our authenticity is our greatest value.
Thanks!
Thanks, Maria! Glad you liked it.
Great Article!
I thoroughly enjoyed this article since I dislike rejection and am put off by people who seem immune to it. I think you are right that our authenticity is the best that we have to offer and what we need to put out there. It gives us a purpose beyond a specific success.
Thanks, I needed this!
This article came at a good time for me. I learned a month ago that my position is being eliminated in a few months, so I've been interviewing up a storm. And dealing with rejection, wondering what I could / should do different on these interviews. Sometimes when you're in the midst of it all, it is hard to remember how random so much of life is. Thanks for sharing this perspective, you've helped me feel better today about things!
Glad it helped
Sorry to hear about your job, but glad my column offered some small measure of solace. I appreciate your taking the time to post a comment.
Healing Through Rejection
Very well said. Not only was this well written, but psychologically right on. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us, you are helping many more than the clients in your consultation room.
Thanks!
Thanks for the kind words, Mark. I appreciate it, especially coming from a therapist I so admire.
Rejection
If you do the math, something less than 5% of TV pilot pitches and scripts that are invested in by a production company or network, are cancelled, or do not become hits (most don't see the light of day ). These were ideas that some executive thought was good enough to green light it.
if these guys are wrong over 95% of the time, why the hell does anyone take anything they say as credible.
Geesh.
Too true!
I couldn't agree more, Steve!
Rejection
A writer friend posted this to Facebook JUST when I needed to read it. I have been writing a novel for years, got an MFA in Creative Writing during the process, am still writing it. I had an inkling, but realized while reading your article, that I haven't finished it because I'm afraid of the potential rejection....even though 12 years ago, an agent told me to finish it, because they knew exactly where they would shop it. Thank you so much.
And I too remember Welcome Back Kotter. Very funny show. And My Favorite Year...not too shabby. Thanks for giving back by your work on the psyche.

Your novel
Thanks for writing, Kate. Glad the article might have helped kick-start you back into working on that novel.
Well Said
I am printing this out and sticking it beside my computer. And I am sending it to all my writer friends with the reminder to repeat, "I am the Sun" at regular intervals. Thanks for a great piece!
Thanks!
I really appreciate your writing, Tina. Thanks so much for sending it to your writer friends, too!
Wisdom to Persevere
I am sharing your words of wisdom with friends and also keeping them handy as a reminder to myself. Thanks. You have an engaging way of conveying important truths.
Thanks for sharing the article!
I really appreciate all of you who've been sharing my columns with friends, family and colleagues. It means a lot to me that what I'm offering is of benefit to people.
i couldn't say it better
I couldn't say it better about the sun and the moon analogy. Very beautifully said!
Thanks!
Thanks for the kind words! I hope you'll keep reading the column.
Rejection
I just read your article-with pleasure. I love that you give people permission to feel their feelings, instead of stiff upper lipping it. I think your sun and moon analogy works in a lot of places.
Thanks!
Thanks, Lil! I really appreciate your comments.
