This is a great article and we should not take our illness as a punishment. To cure this we need to follow the process of meditation and art of living. It helps a lot.
Interesting, I've never heard of a 'spiritual director.' That's similar to the type of work I do actually.
I think the reason why those who are spiritual cope better with illness, setbacks, etc. because they know that there's more than just physical existence. Whether they know this intuitively or through direct experience, the stakes aren't as high when people believe that "we only live once" and that this is it.
Spiritual direction as a profession is not that well known, which is one reason I wrote about it. The other is, as you noted, people who have a spiritual orientation find life's difficulties easier to deal with.
