I'm not at work today because, like most other Brits, I'm caught up in the British Royal wedding. Let me hasten to add that I'm not a Royalist, yet I'm totally connected to that atmosphere of excitement and emotion.
That's because we're doing what we do best. We're a reserved bunch but when we get going, there's no stopping us. Flags, bunting, and cheering crowds are everywhere: people have come together all over the country to celebrate. The bands are starting to play, the Household Cavalry are mounted on their gleaming horses. Pomp and pageantry is what today is all about.
What does the occasion mean to us? It's a celebration - of hope and renewal. For example he last time we saw Prince William and Prince Harry together on a state occasion, they were following their mother's coffin. But if any institution is to survive and thrive, it needs celebration from time to time. Especially when things are tough.
That celebration means the leadership showing a real and authentic connection to the people involved. Which is why we Brits feel so warmly to Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Because they feel real and authentic: what you see is what you get.
