Get Your Give On

Give a little bit. Make a big impact.

Scarcity versus Abundance, and How Meditation Can Help

My giving has landed me in a state of depletion.

DepletedMbali warned me in the beginning of the project to watch out for the tendency to overgive and I think in the past few weeks I have fallen into this pattern. "Giving does not mean giving so much that you feel depleted or deprive yourself of the things you need for basic survival," warned Mbali. "In fact overgiving, is a red flag that you are operating from the energy of scarcity rather than abundance."

I have recently expended a lot of my giving energies helping a friend in need find housing and employment, and I think my efforts have landed me in a state of depletion. I am feeling run down and drained of energy. Luckily Mbali showed up in LA to spend the weekend with me and we were able to talk about all I've done for this woman -- which was definitely overextending myself. Helping her move two times in three weeks was too taxing on my physically and helping her purchase basic furniture has left my bank account drained to a scary level where my husband and I are a little worried about covering our bills for October. I know God will provide for us and we will be able to make the payments we need to make somehow, but right now I'm feeling frozen in financial fear, which is a place I haven't been in quite some time.

While talking to Mbali, she asked me, "What sense of lack have you been trying to fill by overgiving?" The first answer that came to mind is that I am feeling disconnected from my husband and am yearning to rekindle a deeper sense of emotional and physical intimacy with Mark. We have hit a rough patch in our marriage and started counseling about a month ago, but I am tending to be impatient and feel frustrated that the change I want to see in our relationship is taking time to develop.  I'm feeling very sad, very alone and extremely angry and frustrated. In short, I'm in scarcity mode and have been offering my gifts from that place, which has left me feeling run down and tired. I've decided that every gift I offer through the rest of this round will be to Mark. That is what feels appropriate and a fitting solution. I must turn my attention to our relationship rather than reaching outside our relationship to overcompensate.

Another powerful way I've found to find healing is through meditation. Particularly through the visualization based techniques that are taught by Angel Stork. Her methods are invaluable to me, to lead me to a sense of groundedness that allows me to focus my energies and improve my state of mind, and concentrate on my physical and emotional well-being. That's why I am so excited about the teleclass Angel and 29 Gifts have scheduled in October. I'm looking forward to taking part in these meditation classes, as well as sharing Angel's methods with everyone who participates in the class with us. Since beginning my meditation practices, though I cannot claim to be symptom free, my symptoms are far less severe, less frequent, and more manageable.
