and Big Egos
Social norms have always felt very confining and small to me. It's egocentric to think 'my way is the right/only/best way'...the way people think about their religion, political party, sports team, car, watch, brand of underpants... If not for fragile egos we might be more open to learning from one another..or seeing from a different persepctive...not having the need to cut someone else down to make ourselves feel better or instantly rejecting something that is new or different simply because you're ignorant about it...I also think it's a little silly because what is acceptable or cool or fashionable today is subject to ridicule tomorrow...like one big historical popularity contest...even with regard to larger concepts and ideas (Hey, I think the world is probably round. Ha! What loser. Everybody knows the world is flat!)
I do appreciate social boundaries and I believe in practicing social graces, with respect/recognition/appreciation for variations in culture, race, profession, gender, sexual orientation. That might sound like a no-brainer but I've learned that not everyone is born with common sense...
(I had a therapist who always ran over in our sessions and then started texting me out of session. That was the end of our brief therapy. I am a therapist so I was a little shocked.)
More and more I'm discovering just how...meddlesome these Egos are...
I apologize in advance for my poor spelling and grammer. It's the rebel in me.
