"Money won't create success, the freedom to make it will." -Nelson Mandela
For the past couple of articles I’ve been talking about limiting decisions, how to identify them and how to work with them. (If you missed those, check them out here.) Now let’s get specific and talk about limiting decisions in the area of money – or more accurately, the lack of money.
That’s right: MONEY. That big hairy area of life that keeps too many people -- especially those in the mental, emotional and physical healing professions – trapped in lives that are unsatisfying and unfulfilling.
(With your permission, I’m going to be blunt and in your face on this topic because I see too many brilliant, powerful people who are trying to shoot a cannon off a leaky rowboat. They have something wonderful to offer the world. But they don’t have the material foundation they need to offer it.)
Let me be perfectly clear: I am Pro-Money!
Are you? Here’s a quick test:
- Do you sometimes have struggle and concern about creating sufficient funds to take care of yourself and your family?
- Do you feel constrained within the lifestyle you are able to afford?
- Do you find yourself spending money you don’t have based on the belief that your ship will come in any day now?
- Are you unable to fund whatever you’ve identified as the next step toward your goals and dreams?
- Do you cringe when you look at your financial picture -- or avoid looking at it at all?
- Is one of your top reasons (by that I mean, top excuses) for not doing, having or being what you want “I can’t afford it?”
If you answered “yes” or even “well, sometimes” to any of the above, you are anti-money.
I don’t care how many dream boards you have on your wall depicting beautiful houses and wonderful vacations. I don’t care whether you carry a fake or real hundred dollar bill in your wallet to represent wealth. I don’t care that you repeat four thousand affirmations daily: “Money comes to me easily and effortlessly,” “I am a magnet for money,” “I am worthy of abundance,” yada yada yada.
If you do not have the results that you want in the financial arena, you are anti-money. You have placed yourself in the victim role when it comes to money. As we say in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), you are not “at cause” with money, you are on the effect side of the equation.
When you are pro-money (or, as we say in Huna, fully pono with money), you have the money you want and need. Period. No exceptions.
“But, Dr. Matt, I’m not money motivated. Money isn’t all that important to me.” Really? As Zig Ziglar said, “Money isn't the most important thing in life, but it's reasonably close to oxygen on the 'gotta have it' scale.”
I’m not necessarily talking about massive amounts of money. I’m talking about the money that you need and desire to live your fullest expression of life. If you don’t have it, you are anti-money.
I don’t mean anti-money on the conscious level. Most of us are smart enough to know that money itself is not bad or evil. But on the unconscious level, where 99.9% of the real growth, change and achievement happens, if you don’t have the money you need and want, you’ve got some limiting beliefs.
In my NLP trainings, I teach that there are 3 requisites of change:
- Getting rid of negative emotions and beliefs, and creating a compelling future (i.e. goal setting).
- Taking action.
- Remaining focused on your desired outcome and reframing any obstacles to keep your unconscious moving forward.
These steps have to happen in that specific sequence. It does no good (as you probably have experienced) to plop a positive conscious intention on top of an unconscious heap of garbage. The stench of the garbage always bleeds through making it extremely difficult if not impossible to keep moving toward your goals in any area. And if you skip step #2 and don’t take action, you’re really telling your unconscious mind, “Hey, I know I said I wanted that but I’d really prefer to fool around on Facebook.”
That’s why in all of our NLP trainings, we focus first on thoroughly eliminating those unconscious negative emotions and beliefs first before we get into any of the tools that will turbo-charge your progress forward. Make sense?
So if you don’t have the money you want and need to live the life you came here to express, somewhere in your internal system, you are anti-money. (Check out my prior articles on limiting decisions and beliefs.) And when you take the steps to become fully pono with money, fully pro-money, you’ll be amazed at how quickly, easily and effortlessly your financial issues resolve themselves!
