Sex Education During the Time of the Cavemen (and Cavewomen)

Sex education is controversial. The liberal and conservative views are presented. An examination of sex education in prehistoric times is presented in order to illuminate this question Read More

While you may be right about

While you may be right about introductions to sex at an early age, as a evolutionary biologist and sometimes anthropologist, that had to be one of the more painful "thought experiments" about pre-historic times I've ever read.

Before we romanticize the past...

Before we romanticize the "healthy" diets of the cavemen, as any evolutionary biologist would know, cavemen evolved to so that the available food was healthy. It's not like they had a lot of choice.

Perhaps something similar with sex education. The few who freaked out watching other humans and animals having sex probably didn't socialize well enough to reproduce.

Pretty funny

Well, I am no biologist, but I think this thought experiment can't be too far off base. Can it? But that is beside the point. The point is that this is a damn funny article and the intent was to show how insanely serious we take the subject of sex. To the point that we almost ruin sex. So let's all lighten up and realize that we all need to lighten up and realize how silly we act about this subject. The kids will be fine. Teach them for heavens sake. Let's have a lite confidence in their ability to handle nature. For real.

As far as thought experiments go...

I recommend Doris Lessing's book The Cleft as an exploration into sex, evolution, gender and society if you are interested in this at all. Beautiful and haunting and not at all like a grubby Flintstones.

Sex isn't very important

really. Why make such a big deal out of it.Anyway it's supposed to be private...so why is it being talked about publicly?

I'd say that's inappropriate behavior.

no, it's not

No, what's supposed to be the case is that everybody has the freedom to manage their sexuality as they see fit. If you think it should be private doesn't make it so for others. Or if you think "it's supposed to be" -- just how makes up the rules that are "supposed to be"?

My question for you is, if you want it to be private, what are you doing here reading about others, and then going so far as posting about sex, even if in the negative? Go back to your private sex life and don't waste your time trying being my moral policeman. I personally like talking about sex, not just having it, so I will not be taking your advice.

I have questions

I don't know why that this type of stuff really interest me. I don't want to go back to being a caveman. Understanding how we developed is important for understanding why we do the things we do. I like to wonder how the caveman actually survived against the elements that even today kill lots of humans. I know that humans were very primal and acted accordingly. My question is did the caveman even know that having sex between a man and woman actually caused pregnancy and birth of a child? Or was it explained as a gift from the gods? Was sex caused by that desire that people get when they come together? I guess these are question that Anthologist been trying to answer and only assumptions can be made of it.

Lets not forget they were

Lets not forget they were essentially as smart as we are. Its only your modern life which makes it hard for you to see how survival was possible then. Go back a few 100 years and the average human life wasn't so different. The "cave man" is still in all of us, and while most have lost the skills needed to survive and thrive, they are still known.

pregnancy

I'm pretty sure that an observant person (perhaps a scientific type) would after a period of time notice that there was a close connection between having intercourse and getting pregnant. But I can't say definitely.
