Not listening/hearing can be an asset

I loved the end of this story because both of my parents are half deaf and they often don't hear the annoying things that their friends or relatives say to me. When I complained to them about how annoyed I was, I was reminded that my parents were oftentimes oblivious to what those people were saying. (This may also explain why they don't find these individuals to be irritating.) Selective hearing can be a good thing if one knows when to exercise it.
