Sex on the Bench: Do Women and Men Have Different Moral Values?

Do men and women have different moral values?  If so, how will this change the Supreme Court if Elena Kagan is confirmed? Read More

loved your post

even though men and women are different still some people want to make apples become oranges !!! thanks for writing this post

Finally

As I was reading this, unfortunately my initial thought was that a lot of people - men in particular - would be angry about the qualities you mention that women are bringing to the bench. I think it's very exciting to see how society will develop with the dominance of women in positions of authority. Similar research on gender to what you site has been done in medical education as well.
Thanks for the post!

what is morality

This piece suggests to me the arbitrary nature of morality - that is, it's a result of evolutionary and cultural history, that could have been otherwise.

So, in identifying differences between men and women there's the temptation to classify women as more moral than men, since most of our moral intuitions are based on feelings such as empathy, women's empathy being stronger.

But this polarity, more empathy morally good, less empathy morally bad, is just as arbitrary as the choice of electrical +ve/-ve or magnetic North South.

Without any good reason to think there are absolute of God given moral codes waiting for man to discover, what does this say about our whole understanding of what morality actually is?

If humans has inherited the big cat propensity to kill the existing cubs of a new mate, would a man marrying a divorcee or widow be evolutionarily driven to commit infanticide? Would this have evolved culturally into a symbolic religious ritual?

I don't think we are close to understanding morality yet. We're too scared of the consequences of that understanding.

Men and women

Even though there is no written explanation about it, I really think that men and women do have different values. That's what make them attract to each other. We could observe with the way our father and mother, brothers and sisters, friend and every men and women around. I think that is too obvious. Men are more logical while women are so emotional. That depict their values.

accepting the reality

there are different roles for men and women because of their gender difference.they are different on mental level which is obvious.the world would be a better place if we simply accept the nature as it is.and give women a position in society which is better suited for them rather than confusing the whole society.

born female raised sort of male

I was raised to show no emotion and thought that emotions were disgusting displays of the weak for most of my life. I admired and emulated the Spartans and Mr. Spock. In grade school all my friends were male and the girls hated me (the feeling was mutual). 50+ years out from that bizarre and traumatic childhood I'm starting to recover from it all and now fit the definition of the female moral psyche to a tee and couldn't be happier!
