Snacking, hunger, and fat
It is important to note that eating "low-fat" foods will leave you hungry - and will make you fatter than ever once you fall off the wagon (as you will).
Eat a diet high in delicious, healthy saturated animal and plant fats (coconut milk and oil, butter, beef tallow) and your junk food cravings will vanish, almost as if by magic.

I've been a fan of yours for a while now: I know that's how you eat. I'm mentioning it for the benefit of your readers here, who might not have ever read you at blogspot.
I love your point that the typical caloric and nutritive recommendations for weight loss are nearly identical to the Minnesota Starvation Experiment. It's amazing that we've been trying the same thing for so long, to so little benefit, and the only response is "You must not be trying hard enough." This begs the question: what massive, systemic failure of national willpower occurred in the late 1970s?
I think we both know the answer, and that it has nothing to do with willpower.

What I'm interested to see is when the dieting studies are conducted if minerals, hormones, and brain chemicals are also being monitored. The food that is grown today is not the same as it was a century ago. The nutrients just are not there. My grandma's orange tree in her backyard grown with just water and good soil tastes completely different than the ones you buy in the store. Before you even open up the box my family sends me each year, I can smell the oranges inside. It makes the most common sense that if you want to live healthy and at a good body weight, you would then need to eat and do activities similar to what our ancestors did before we became "developed." For women this includes at least 4 hours of moving a day--from walking, doing chores, making meals, etc. I find the closer I stay to all of this, including the walks outside--I feel the healthiest in my brain. And my mood stabilizes. However, what I have found is there is a need to supplement the minerals like chromium, and take things like melatonin on an as-needed basis (to help with serotonin, dopamine, and melatonin production if thrown out of whack by diet/stress). Paying attention daily to how I produce my stress-reducing hormone, oxytocin, also helps too. I hope more research will be done to help us get back to normal.

This study confirms what I believe regarding how bad calorie restrictive diets are for people. I recall a speech given by someone in College about dieting. She asked how to get a skinny person to gain weight and said the answer was to put them on a diet. According to her, deprivation diets(before popular protein diets), cause people to crave fat and that they will often binge as a result after being deprived too long. I have made lifestyle changes and have sustained weight loss for years. I don't know if there are other medical explanations to why I have become so thin but it has been for a number of years. I do not eat desserts other than fruit. Too much sugar is certainly bad for some people too and I think I am in that class of people.

just don't expect this "paleolithic diet" of natural foods to cause significant weight loss if you've already spent half your lifetime dieting. Eating natural foods when hungry and getting movement in your life will benefit your health no matter what your weight, though. And that's what's really important.
Weight is NOT a Problem
While this article made the valid point that dieting is nearly impossible to do over the long term, she still misses the bigger picture. There is nothing wrong with being fat. She is mistaken that our ancestors did not "suffer" from obesity. Maybe the hunters and gathers did not, but we are long past that point, NEVER to return!!!! Fat people have been around ever since agriculture. Not as many as today, but they existed throughout history. We need to understand that Mother Nature created people in different shapes and sizes, end and period. The more diverse a species, the better its chance of survival. For centuries, it was because of fat that many civilizations survived. Ironically, the days of food shortages will be here again soon. Thank goodness for our energy reserves, they just may save the day again!!!

I would like to see a similar study conducted on people who were not of average weight to begin with. Not like on television where they eat nothing and get put through a grueling regimen every day, that's unrealistic and not the same as a reasonable long term study looking for data, not makeovers.
I mean walking 22 miles a week which is not outrageous, and being put on the restrictive diet to see if there were the same effects on those that had and used the calorie stores, as well as what were the differences (if any) between significant surplus weight loss vs. average weight people being restricted. There may be benefit to using surplus stores that don't render this effect, or they may go through the same psychological breakdown. If they did use surplus stores and then ate the way suggested above as opposed to the psychological and instinctual reasons after they achieved a closer to "normal" weight, perhaps there would be a happy maintenance medium? Or maybe not. And this isn't a fat is bad, can this help you lose weight etc thing, It would just be good to see if there are the same effects or if this method does work when food is "scarce"which is why there is supposedly weight gain in the first place, and to see if that prep sustains the psychological and physical body while those stores are used, as well as if if would be maintainable after knowing food is not scarce and having a different way of eating and using energy. Would be interesting, and I'd like to see that before declaring this is the wrong approach for weight loss in a country where there isn't scarcity.
