What could possibly possess an apparently polite, pleasant, quiet, reserved, compassionate, empathetic, forgiving and deeply religious Army psychiatrist to allegedly commit this incredibly evil deed? Read More

What in the world does the
What in the world does the fact that this guy has never married have to do with him shooting up an Army base?? Why would that need to be mentioned in the first sentence of a (highly biased) article that has nothing to do with marriage status?

It is common practice to mention marital status, age, and ethnicity at the beginning of clinical case presentations in general. In this case, Major Hasan's personal isolation and alienation may have played some part in what happened, as it does in many mass murders. Which is why I mentioned it. Fellow PT blogger Stanton Peele focused on this aspect in his recent posting on this case. (See https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/addiction-in-society/200911/lonely-...) as have I in previous postings on such acts of violence. But if your objection is that merely being never-married or single does not necessarily mean one is socially isolated, depressed or alienated, and does not necessarily make one more likely to become a mass murderer, you are right. As for my posting being biased, I don't know what you mean. But remember that bias can also be in the eye of the beholder.
Bias? Read the article again,
Bias? Read the article again, your biased opposition did not allow you to read the article properly.
Have been Mobbing the reason?

"Mobbing"--a form of emotional or psychological abuse in the workplace--is a term that is more popular currently in Europe than here in America. But your point is very well taken. So much so that I may write a post on this particular topic soon. It certainly seems possible that workplace harassment or "mobbing" regarding his religion and ethnicity was part of what Dr. Hasan reacted so violently and maladaptively to at Fort Hood. Regarding your mention of the phenomenon of "running amok," see also my previous post https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evil-deeds/200903/running-amok-in-a...
Thanks for explaining what
Thanks for explaining what "mobbing" meant. I was totally confused for a bit.
Military Secrets
Dr. Diamond,
I enjoyed the article on Dr. Hassan, because it shed some light on what could have been going on with this gentleman. I've seen in the news where there is a paper trail regarding his activities, and some how this "fell through the cracks". I beleive this is reflective of the Army and his superior officers. I believe that this type of incident can and will happen again with other soldiers for different reasons. I would think that the Army could also be held liable for this mans actions. They knew he was a ticking time bomb and ignored him. When will we stop ignoring the signs of people who are in mental distress. Maybe it is easier for our society to not deal with mental disorders, or maybe there are not enough resources, I'm not sure. But, it is scary! Thank You!
Did He Do It?
Are there eyewitnesses? Could he have been given drugs? What happened to the other two shooters? I suspect that he's a fall guy.
