Michael,
What a refreshing take on the subject. Every line you wrote here strikes me as completely true. I especially could not agree more that we have no direct control over what we believe but that each of us is constrained to believe what we do by the degree of rigor we require that evidence prove what we believe (also, I think, not under our direct control).
