Another explanation

I think another explanation is the likelihood that we may find ourselves in a similar situation. I was actually ripped off in this exact way, on Burnet near Northcross Mall. The man was well dressed, wore glasses, and spoke clear English. He gave a similar story and said his cellphone ran out of batteries as well. A ton of warning bells were going off in my head, but in my naivete I gave him some cash. I think the fact that he was more similar to me, and the fact that I could possibly end up in a similar situation, made it easier for me to empathize with him and thus let down my guard.

hubris

maybe we secretly indulge in the fact that doing good deeds make us superior and or more special than others. but the world is a strange and dangerous place, although i would like to help them, it is something i would never do. of course its always interesting to hear about a panhandler getting panhandled by his target. too bad people arent more honest.

If he was panhandling--then why would he ask for gas? Gas doesn't buy crack. It is sad that you wouldn't help someone because you thought he MIGHT be giving you a false story. And what if he was panhandling? It is often the only way a person can get money for something to eat.
