When we put off a task until tomorrow, we often have this naïve view about tomorrow as a "blank slate." We believe and act as if we have the whole day open to us. Usually, this is far from the truth. How can we plan our goal pursuit more realistically and effectively? Read More

Intentions vs. Goals
I really like the distinction between intentions and goals. Goals, if set correctly, are measurable and concrete visions of success. Intentions have a tendancy to be mmore nebulous. When you can "see" the future result, it makes it a bit easier to take the first step to achieving it.
Unschedule: It works! See Neil A. Fiore: The Now Habit
Hey, Karen in Dallas here. I hope this "what works" sharing via the blog takes off, so here's my contribution:
"The Unschedule" is covered in detail in The Now Habit by Neil Fiore. He cites Bliss in explaining the method. It's a great book that is helping me a lot. Chapters include:
Why we procrastinate
How we procrastinate (I need a chapter on that?! I could fill volumes! - K)
Guilt Free Play, Quality Work (my favorite - really made a difference)
Overcoming Blocks to Action
The Unschedule
Working in the Flow State
and a few more.
Re: Unschedule. I used to run my day that way! In fact, that was how I managed to train for my first marathon back in 1995. After writing in everything that had to be done for the week at a scheduled time (meetings at work, commute, grad school at night, and a list very similar to Tim's list with the family as our kids were in that range then), I wrote in my primary and alternate workout times for each day. Sometimes the only time I could run would be 4:45am, and if I woke up and it was raining, I just made myself go anyway because there was no back-up time and I was on a 6-day/week regimented schedule so I couldn't make it up another day. It worked!
So hearing the Marathon runner's letter a couple of weeks back on the podcast, and then hearing the Unschedule that this blog refers to, I made a decision to start using the unschedule TODAY. 14 years ago I didn't have the simplicity of color coded, drag and drop scheduling, so this will be even easier!
Aside on the book: I was reading it on my Kindle at a hotel bar on night.
Bartender - "Whatcha reading?"
Me - "Book on Procrastination"
Bartender - "You sure you should be at the bar right now?"
Errrrr....
2 months later, same bar, same Kindle, same bartender.
Bartender - "Whatcha reading?"
Me - "Book on Procrastination"
Bartender - "You sure you should be at the bar right now?"
Yeahhhhh... might have been a good time to tell a little white lie...
The truth is that I had finished the book weeks ago and was referencing some notes I'd added (LOVE my Kindle!)
