Cortisol

Interesting research.

Brief elevations in the level of cortisol produced by stress have been shown to increase alertness and attention, memory functions, and pain threshold. It seems very reasonable to speculate that the stress created by a looming deadline may give some individuals the drive and motivation that they lack without stress.

Does this seem plausible to you?
