A Dad's Diary

Two fathers explore life with children on the autism spectrum.

A Proactive Approach to Treatment

Thoughts on how to address your child's autism practically.

I just read a book called The Brain that Changes Itself and it's given me a lot of ideas about treating autism.

I think austism ought to be thought of as a brain injury. Parents should look at the strengths and weaknesses of their children. They should make lists of what their children can and cannot do and try to figure out which parts of the brain are functioning well and which parts are not functioning well. Then they should find out what kind of brain exercises might help strengthen the injured parts of the brain or try to help their children develop alternative neurological pathways.

I also believe that intense training programs for children suffering from autism are the way to go. The more intense the better. I believe that extreme effort, at first on the part of parents but later on the part of the affected children, can lead to dramatic progress. The science of neuroplasticity points towards the possibility of rehabiliation of almost any kind of brain injury.
