Leaders: Born or Made?

This is the most basic and most often-asked question about leadership. To cut to the chase, the answer is: Read More

focus on the "made"!

Great posting from a sage leadership scholar. Nice to see some research behind this age-old debate. I recently heard a F500 exec tell a room full of leadership students w/o hesitation that leaders are born, period. One interesting Q is whether the focus should be on the act of leadership as a group dynamic that can be fostered throughout an organization, versus focusing on the individual traits and characteristics of "the leader." We think of leadership as a plural, not singular, endeavor.

Thanks again for a great posting.

There are many "myths" and "misunderstandings" about leadership

Thanks, Greg. There is so much terrific research out there that execs aren't aware of. That's why I'm so excited about this on-line opportunity to help get the word out.

Every day I come across research that has tremendous value to those folks who are practicing leadership everyday, but most of it goes largely unnoticed. I hope to keep getting the word out.

Are Leaders Born or Developed?

Hi Ronald,

This my first post here.

Personally, I think anyone can be a better leader by learning effective leadership skills. But to be a Great Leader, I think somehow it is related to one's talent or charisma, that is inborn.

I agree with Michael Podolinsky that good leaders should be lead by examples.

Hi Yetti,
Agreed. There is a "portion" of leadership that consists of innate traits, qualities, temperament. The best scientific estimates are 1/3 of leadership is inborn. Yes, the best leaders do indeed lead by example. Doing that is one of the key characteristics of transformational leaders.
Thanks for your comment.

The Answer is Both

Based on our own two decades of research on how leaders build trust, we would say the answer is that leaders are BOTH born and made, and we would agree that the majority of the influence is "made." Leaders' courage, humility and authenticity all enhance their ability to build trust with others demonstrate trustworthiness as well.

What's a leader?

I think we should go back to asking ourselves what a leader really is. I don't see it as someone who's in front of a group of people, bearing all the answers and pretending to have a macho attitude. I think trustworthiness and humility do go a long way, and you certainly can cultivate those virtues along the way.
